Cold Spring Harbor, NY, USA. New evidence helps explain how the marking of DNA sequences by groups of methyl molecules (methylation) can influence the type of cell a stem cell will become.
Methylation has long been thought to influence differentiation, the cellular maturation process. Subtle changes in methylation patterns within subsets of a particular cell type have now been observed and closely scrutinized. They reveal some intriguing mechanisms.

TS-Si News Service Tuesday, 27 September 2011 Melbourne, VIC, Australia. Researchers have located a gene regulatory region which appears to control testis development in the foetus without regard to chromosomal organization.
The research raises questions about the complex gene regulation system that controls human sex development, especially the mechanism by which the SOX9 gene is upregulated and testicles form in the embryo, even in the presence of an XX chromosome.

Daniel C. Vock (Stateline) Tuesday, 27 September 2011 Washington, DC, USA. States have received federal disaster assistance more times in the first nine months of 2011 than in any other year. But the surge in disasters comes at a time when states, localities and the federal government are struggling to find money to pay for relief.
Last week, when President Obama named New Jersey a federal disaster area for floods that came before Hurricane Irene, he cemented 2011’s ranking as the United States’ most disaster-prone year ever.

TS-Si News Service Monday, 26 September 2011 Berkeley, CA, USA. Researchers succeeded in decoding and reconstructing the dynamic visual experiences of people, paving the way for reproduction of dreams and memories.
So far, the technology blends brain imaging and computer simulation to reconstruct movie clips people have already viewed, such as Hollywood movie trailers, but offers some startling possibilities.

TS-Si News Service Monday, 26 September 2011 Columbus, OH, USA. Researchers have discovered a method for simultaneously visualizing gene number and protein expression in individual cells, using a technique that offers broad applicability to molecular biology investigations.
The fluorescent in situ gene protein assay combines traditional fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with the in situ proximity ligation assay, which is capable of resolving individual protein molecules.

TS-Si News Service Monday, 26 September 2011 Austin, TX, USA. Finding a job in today's economy is difficult in the best of circumstances, but many women are facing an even bigger challenge: returning to the workforce after a long absence.
Researchers recently looked at the characteristics on older women's resumes that received the most success in securing job interviews, finding that the top characteristic for middle-aged women seeking an entry level job was vocational or computer training.

TS-Si News Service Friday, 23 September 2011 Riverside, CA, USA. A large and robust DNA matrix now represents 99 percent of mammalian families, covering the earliest history of mammalian diversification and the deepest divergences among living mammals.
The research team stresses that their time tree is a work in progress. In the next two years, they expect to go beyond the current data on 164 mammalian species and construct a supermatrix, also based on gene sequences, that includes the majority of living mammals.

TS-Si News Service Friday, 23 September 2011 Providence, RI, USA. Studies in the mouse model organism, a strong predictor of human reproduction, show that pregnant mothers who were exposed to either moderate or high levels of bisphenol A did not deliver male pups with adverse effects to their reproductive systems.
Bisphenol A (BPA), a common component of plastic used in many consumer products, has recently become infamous and banned in some places because it can mimic natural estrogen in the body.

Washington, DC, USA. The recession officially ended more than two years ago. But the percentage of people living in poverty — with household incomes below $22,350 for a family of four — has continued to rise.
Data released Thursday (September 22) by the U.S. Census Bureau show that 20 states saw a 20 percent or higher increase in the poverty rate from 2007, just before the Great Recession began, to 2010. At the same time, family incomes dropped. In 16 states, median incomes fell more than

Providence, RI, USA. Individuals attempting to attract a mate often avoid advertising their political leanings. Political interests, however, appear to be a crucial factor in pursuing long-term relationships.
A study in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior shows that singles are more likely to emphasize card playng or admit they are overweight on their online dating profiles than to say they are politically liberal or conservative.

Austin, TX, USA. The Lone Star state may know more than any other about collecting overdue child support. And in a tough budget year, the state managed to increase funds for a novel program that gives noncustodial parents who are behind on child support a choice: a job or jail.
Judge Joseph Perkins has enforced Texas child support orders for 20 years, but it’s a case from a year ago that he thinks about most often. It involved a young woman who wanted to open a tattoo shop in her garage to

Lancaster, PA, USA. We pose a hypothetical question. Suppose a certain state, long a political power in national politics, was beginning to lose some of its clout, as its population growth slowed.
Once the second largest state in terms of electoral votes, it had recently fallen to fifth place with only 20 electoral votes, well behind electoral behemoths like California (55 votes), Texas (38 votes) and New York (29 votes).

Texas, USA. I am not transgender. I am not part of the “Transgender Community”.
I was never part of the “Transgender Community” because there was no “Transgender Community” when I transitioned. There was a “Drag Queen Community” and I was not a part of it. There was a “Transvestite Community” and I sure as hell wasn’t part of that.
