Newport News, VA, USA. Life is easier now than 20 years ago, but gay couples still strive for recognition and equal legal protections. Ann Hageman and Kelly Matteson ply paint brushes, move boxes and arrange furniture, all under the watchful eye of their dog, Casey, and a trio of cats.
It's been almost two months since the couple moved from Portsmouth to a home in midtown Newport News. They picked a neighborhood that offers more space and is closer to Hageman's job at the Jefferson Lab. Beyond a screened-in back porch, a large yard slopes to a creek that winds along the rear property line.
