DNA Blueprints Guide The Construction Of Specific Human Structures

Chad Mirkin discusses using DNA to build a three-dimensional structure out of gold, likening the process to building a house. Starting with basic materials such as bricks, wood, siding, stone and shingles, a construction team can build many different types of houses out of the same building blocks.

Increased Risk Of DVT But Treatment Lags
Hello, and thank you for dropping by to visit. As I am sure you know, zeroing in on the exact combination of terms within one study is very difficult. However, there are a few references that can provide a useful start. http://www.acponline.org/ and the http://www.aafp.org/online/en/home.html have recently published a clinical practice guideline that summarizes current approaches for the management of venous thromboembolism. The practicum includes an extensive set of references. Management of venous thromboembolism: A clinical prac...

means I am animated by my femninity within and my femaleness without. And I convey to others and have done so in sometimes difficult circumstances. In time, and given enough exposure, other women - and men - know to whom they are relating. I understand what Diana meant; I don't know that we can ever have a litmus test of who is who. I do know the same woman she mentioned who lived as a woman for years, then went into a rush for what she said was her necessary correction. I was there when that woman returned from surgery, happy as a lark. I h...

Lisa, I did not mean prettiness when I spoke of appearing as a female (did you really think that I did?); I meant holding yourself out to society as female. As your post suggests, you do not have to have any particular look to play that role, but IMO it is important to make clear to society that you intend to play it. I think that this is important for many of us. I could not stand going back and pretending to be a man, even though I would be (then secretly) physically correct. I do think there are people that feel the same way about their so...

Diana wrote (among other phrases -- see above) appearing and being treated as anything but female. I don't know what this phrase means. There are natal women who look like homely men, big boned women and women with flat boobs, slim hips, bad skin and mustaches. If they so wish, most of them are still treated as female by men and other women. The "appearance of a women" has little do do with whether she is "treated like a female." How a women is treated has more to do with how she reacts to the presence of males. And at the subcon...

Hi Lisa, I agree with just about all of this. One comment I would like to make, though, is that desire for the correct gender presentation is strongly correlated to having the correct anatomy for a lot of us, and this does make the distinction between persons with HBS and at least some so-called non-ops a little less neat. To be sure, I wasn't satisfied with proper gender presentation alone and paid my money and took my chances on the operating table like the rest. But I needed BOTH. The right body is necessary, but not sufficient! I could n...

This is as good a destruction of the "transgender = transsexual" myth as I have read ever, Lisa. Congratulations. Although for some reason I doubt Mr Pistol would agree with me! But then transgender identified persons seldom agree on anything tangible or not available in "The Beano" (Children's comic book in the UK)
How can we uphold the right to science?
Sadly, the "dumbing down" of education in the USA has resulted in students that avoid anything that's difficult such as a Science Class where the RIGHT answers are mandatory for those where they get "Oh, here's an A for you Johnnie for making an effort although you are wrong" lest they bruise the tender egos and self esteem of the little loafer. We graduate students that can't read or write let alone add 2+2. My Dad was a Jr High School Math/Algebra teacher; he couldn't flunk students in the LA School System; he also heard a "Science Teacher (a...
Religion, Self-control, and Values
Interesting article; but to again hark back to my school nights at my Old Alma Mater, USCLB and a class in Management taught by a PhD candidate (and unfortunately at my age I can't recall his name) who had a paper he was working on to try and provider a better "Predicter" of how people would perform in a job position. Part of this was a test using various little sayings like "you get ahead because of people you know", etc and there was a scale of 1-10 you could use to rate your agreement with the saying. He was giving the test to his classes an...

My book is a work in progress as I also have to work a job to pay the bills. It encompasses more than the usual transbiography as I was also a member of SDS/Weatherman. Co-ran the NTCU National Transsexual Counseling Unit and was involved in the LA Women's Building as well as a staff photographer for the Lesbian Tide during the late 1970s transwars. A fair portion of it discusses transsexual activism of that era as well as the cultural underpinnings. In some ways it is a movement memoir. I am planning on ending it in 1980 some 8 years afte...

Hi Sharon, thanks for pointing me to Suzy's extract. I have to say that, until now I had not heard of her. Perhaps that isn't surprising since my origin is in in wartime Britain (1940). I guess I have read a few (mandatory for PLU) autobiographies but in latter years I have tended to avoid them since they provoke memories I find upsetting and would rather not recall. Suzy's exrtact is appealing and intriguing but had the usual effect of filling my eyes with tears and me beating my breast. One particular phrase struck a chord with me "...faci...
Outside the Gates of Eden (an Excerpt)
There is so much in the opening sentences that echo my own experience at a similar time. I was however in London and not New York or San Francisco. When friends saw me for the first time their reaction was very similar to the narrative here. The mere sight of me confirmed their unspoken thoughts. The transgender colonisation of our narratives talked of by Suzanne and Joanne has confused medical professionals and young HBS women and men alike. It's lies continue to make our lives difficult and our truth made out to be a lie. It has to stop and ...

Sharon - Lisa, thank you both, and Suzanne also, for this excerpt. I'm not certain that the book will be available in New Zealand, but will pressure my local library in the hope that it can be obtained. Suzanne writes of the 'colonization' of HBS by transgenderism in her previous article. It is apt term. So profound has that process been that our stories, our voices and our lived- life experiences have been denied us. We've been called liars for telling the truth and encouraged to lie as a way of obtaining our remedy. IMHO transgenderism is ...

What About Non-op Transsexuals? A No-op Notion
Ths column, originally posted in 2006, has received a lot of comment around the internet. The comment by "Walther Lostos" invokes a common theme among critics. "Lostos", claims the "absurdity" of my ... description and denigration of "no-op" transsexuals ... While one can disagree with my description, there is no "denigration" at all. In fact, I said "Let transsexuals be transsexuals" and "Transgenders can be themselves and garner respect for their good will if they cease trying to co-opt the space needed by transsexuals to fix their birth cond...
What About Non-op Transsexuals? A No-op Notion
Dear Walther; Your argument is without merit; if a MALE chose to have SRS and wasn't a Transsexual or have HBS then he is a fetishistic type of person and since you seem to be poorly informed, it DOES happen and those people still identify as MALE. There is NO WAY I would ever call them "Transsexual". Someone that choses to be Non-op is a "Transgenderist" and most of them prefer to claim that Gender is a "social construct" confusing "gender stereotypes" with male/female gender psychologically. People with HBS are DRIVEN to have SRS; it isn't ...

What About Non-op Transsexuals? A No-op Notion
Your description and denigration of "no-op" transsexuals is absurd. It is because gender is not always correlated with one's physiological sex, that the very concept of a transsexual exists. To equate that identity with a choice to have sexual reassignment surgery is as arbitrary as it is baseless. "Facts are stubborn things". Right. So since you are genetically male, you are a man no matter what you do to your sexual organs. Your position is as absurd as that. Let me ask you this. Suppose someone decided to have sexual reassignment sur...

What Pamela says about directed attention is surely correct. However, as the authors' state: The purpose of the study was to develop and test an exchange list Greek-Mediterranean diet that could be used in future clinical trials of breast cancer prevention. To that end, they had to get women to actually use the diet to demonstrate its effectiveness and establish a baseline for further study.
Women On Med Diet Double Fruit, Veggies, Consume "Good" Fats
Having a BS degree in "Operations Management", this study reminded me of a study done in the 30's regarding "productivity" where they took two groups of women involved in some type of assembly operation; One group was placed in an area with brighter lighting, better designed work stations, and a more attentive management; the other group was left in the "normal" assembly area. Not surprisingly the first group had a higher output and it was always 'assumed' that it was due to better working conditions. It wasn't until years later that when the s...

You mentioned "Explorer 7.(something) Beta". Did you mean to say that? If so, an upgrade to the current version would do the trick. If you meant "Explorer 8" Beta - that is an unstable version. It will be a while until a stable version is available. In either case, we are looking into the problem.

OOOPS, Sorry, the slide thingy is on the right and jumps to the LEFT (did I mention that I am BLOND ??) Sometimes it starts out way to the left and when I enter letters, rather than going across they go DOWN: L I K E T H I S with the slide thingy just to the right ( okay just checked) to the right of the letters
Wild Words (The Warrior Woman at Thought)
I have Windows XP professional and Internet Explorer 7.(something) Beta. The thingy on the right that jumps to the left is the slide thing with the up arrow at the top and the down arrow at the bottom that would let you scan down through a post or PDF document. I think what happens is my post disappears way to the left when the slide thingy jumps to the right. When I enter the security image, the letters seem to push off to the left also and all you can see is the last letter entered. I do use a wireless Microsoft keyboard and mouse
Wild Words (The Warrior Woman at Thought)
Interesting comment. You noted something interesting: ... that dang up/down arrow thingy on the right jumping all the way to the left) ... What is the "thingy"? can you describe your OS/Browser combination?

I know Sue, every now and then I have a problem with this damn comment form and it makes me use "unladylike" language. When I do manage to write a post (without that dang up/down arrow thingy on the right jumping all the way to the left) I copy my comment then do all the other stuff and hitting the "add comment" button. I usually have to enter the security image 2 or 3 times too before one finally takes, DOn't know why, but I'm persistent. Pamela

Christmas Carols: A Modern Songbook and More!
I recently learned that studio enhancements have gone to whole new level. Some people can not sing at all, but the electronics can correct pitch and a number of other things to make it sound at least acceptable. I wonder when electronics will improve thinking (at least part of Lisa's point in her parody).

I work as the receiving supervisor at a retail establishment; after having to listen to Xmas music 8 hours a day. I can state without fear of contradiction that there are some vocalists that should absolutely be BANNED from singing Christmas music with "their" interpretation of the classics-- I've heard some sung so badly that what should be a bouncy jolly tune sounded like a funeral dirge, others had no relation to what they were suppose to sound like. Everyone’s Flown The Cuckoo’s Nest
You are right, Sharon. It does seem that there are those who gain a sense of self-importance from being seen by others as a "minority". Usually it is those to whom such a thing is their only "claim to fame". Most of us just want to get our transition done and get on with living our lives like anyone else, whether we are physically able to do so in "stealth" or not. Really, it should not matter; the pity of it is that, in many places, it does. The TG folk will keep trying to associate themselves with us, whatever we do. Of that I am sure. Logic...

Psychiatric Politics: Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID)
A different Sharon said: There are studies that show people with Biid have a smaller than average parietal lobe. You may be referring to an anatomical fact: the right side of the inferior-parietal lobule is typically smaller in males than females. Where reduced size does occur, the size difference is quantitatively significant. The external (exteroceptive) senses permit us to perceive the outside world. Our interoceptive senses permit us to perceive pain and the positioning of our internal organs. Proprioception is altogether different. The ...
Psychiatric Politics: Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID)
The broad PHYSICAL deep neurology of Harry Benjamin Syndrome (HBS or true transsexuality) is becoming more apparent every day. Although the susceptible social studies soft scientist may see surface similarities that traditional psychologists and psychiatrist attribute to a psychological state of mind, the association is only skin deep and ONLY if the shrink or social "scientist" in question is untrained in the hard sciences. HBS men and women are NOT driven to remove working arms and legs. When an HBS woman or man removes a sexual organ or cha...
Psychiatric Politics: Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID)
There are studies that show people with Biid have a smaller than average parietal lobe. This effects there proprioception. So its their body telling them their leg should not be there not their mind. Also, most of these people get these felling during puberty and are men. So my question is, could the desire for a man to be a women be also caused by the parietal lobe? Are there more men becoming women than women becoming men?

Marriage vs. Civil Union
Mr Finn's ideas make sense to me; Get your license from the "state" and take your choice of doing it religiously or doing it "civilly"; but both have equal rights and privileges under the law. If a church doesn't want to perform "same-sex marriages" that's their choice, no court should be able to force them on the issue; However, the religions equally have no right to dictate the terms of what's acceptable under a civil union.
