Strong opinions, well said, are acceptable. Homophobic insults are not. Please reconsider the last sentence in your comment entitled Lady Karen of Schelleville.

Transgender Apartheid
Whenever someone make a case for social medicine here in the States, this kind of nightmare is what I imagine to be the end result, well along with the inevitable higher cost and much lower level of care because of rampant system abuse by all involved. This is why I have no use for gay men/LGBT (AKA: Gay, Inc.), and Big Government/Socialism/State run anything as the two will always collude in order to ensure that we (being women, which most men, (all gay men) despise whilst pretending to like) shall be relegated to the bottom level of society where "any man sick enough to cut off his penis ob...

Why We Ostracise: The Failing Cat’s Cradle
I have been ostracised by virtually every group I've ever been involved with, to greater of lesser degree. I'm just one of those people with the great big capital "L" stamped invisibly on my forehead. Somehow, I did not think that when my kids were grown, they and their father would team up against me, but they do. I walk in a room, my daughter will literally walk out, and the whole family talk to each other back and forth, but again, not to me. I think people like me give off something like an "air of desperation" or something that puts people off maybe. I have to cite another example: on ...

Study Confirms Higher Medicare Spending Yields Better Health
Let me see, the numbers would indicate that for a 10% increase in spending that person health got better by 1.9% and a 1.5% increase in survivability; I would assume some of group A are also a part or all of group B. For a 10% increase in spending, that's NOT very good.. Researchers called it a "modest effect" ? I'd call it a pretty poor usage of the money for such a tiny improvement.

Managed Care: The Spreading Medicaid Innovation
Critics of the fee-for-service model say it results in haphazard care for patients and allows providers to drive up costs by ordering unnecessary tests and treatments. Critics say MCOs — at least the for-profit ones (some are nonprofits) — have an incentive to offer skimpy services and deny procedures in order to boost profits Somehow, these two statements seem direct opposites. However on the first quote, one must remember that providers began ordering "unnecessary" tests and treatments to cover themselves in the event of a malpractice law suit. This was due to too many ambulance chasin...

Reinvigorate Medicine: Why Do We Need Cases Journal?
I love case reports. Sure, we can't rely on anecdotal cases to guide our treatment, but reading a case report let's us see the patient, not just the numbers. In this way, it stands out in our mind. I don't go to sleep thinking about numbers, but I have lost sleep remembering that one interesting case, however. Also, if we start collecting a pile of case reports that have something in common, we know that a grander study is called for to determine the statistical significance of the findings in the case reports.

Chicago Train Bottleneck Leads To Rare Coordination
It would probably help if the railroads adopted the same plan the airlines did where they all have separate hubs. If you are going to California from Tampa Florida, you don't HAVE to pass through Chicago as you do on the Amtrack route. Instead you can go through Dallas, Atlanta, Memphis or several other regional hubs on different airlines. Another point is that once you arrive at one of these hubs, you can a direct flight in most instances directly to another metropolitan air port at or close to your desired destination. Try that with the train service. To track the train from Tampa to Califo...

Missouri Puppy Mills Outmaneuver Animal Rights Movement
The law does nothing to regulate so called puppy mills. It does more harm to legitimate breeders than anyone else. The space requirements are the same for all dogs regardless of their size and wouldn't be adequate for a greyhound and is overboard for any of the toy breeds. It was a stupid law and should be repealed it obviously was authored by people who attended public schools in California.

Body Swap Experiment: Tricked Brain Goes Barbie
I agree with this study. I went to the Philippines recently after 9 years of living in the U.S. I grew up in the Philippines so I still remember the streets around the neighborhood and how to get home. I also remember exactly how my old house looked like. Being away from home for such a long time, I was shocked to see that everything was not as big as I thought it was. The house seemed a lot smaller, the roads looked a lot tighter, and the way from my house to school is a lot shorter. Since I grew up physically, the world did seem smaller.

State Workers to Pay More for Health Benefits
Why shouldn't government employees pay a part of their health care just like everyone else. Matter of fact, they should pay the average of what every other worker in the state has to pay for insurance. Any more, wages are comparable to or better than wages at private employers and the government worker has better job security and is harder to fire even for cause.

Missouri Puppy Mills Outmaneuver Animal Rights Movement
Based on the text posted earlier, the relevant portion of the initiative has the following to say about space requirements. It is up to residents of Missouri and our readers to determine whether the requirements, as priginally approved, were reasonable. As posted by the Misouri Secretary of State, the voter-approved ballot initiative, since repealed, had these provisions that addressed space requirements. 273.345. 3. (4) Sufficient space to turn and stretch freely, lie down, and fully extend his or her limbs; 273.345. 5. (5) ”Sufficient space to turn and stretch freely, lie down, and full...

As it was to be implemented and not as it was sold to the voters. Classic Transsexual
I really don't understand people regarding the term classic transsexual. It was a term used by shrinks to wind up there patients, until about ten years ago. I do not understand people who cling to terms that were terms that psychiatrists used to press there buttons and wind them up. 25 years ago I was told I was a classic transsexual by a psychiatrist. I felt vindicated. A couple of weeks later I met two local TS people and I raised it in the conversation. They both had the same thing told to them by the same psychiatrist. One of them 20 years earlier than me. Then I realised the shrink ha...

Stuck in Lodi With Memphis Blues Again
I wasn't a big Dylan fan either, although I've listened to my share of his music and saw him live during a tour with The Band in, er, 1970-something. I was into British Invasion, then prog, then sweet harmonies, then had another adolescence with punk and New Wave, then had yet another adolescence when Nirvana and the rest blew up boring radio. And I'm still listening to new music, when I can find stuff I like. You bet I'll rock if I want to! And you keep writing. We ain't dead yet!

New York: Big First Step Toward Fiscal Sustainability
New York and Gov. Cuomo should probably look at what's happen in Mass. Since they started cutting payments to Doctors under their "Health Care" plan. Fewer and fewer Doctors accepting new Medicaid patients and reducing the number of medicare patients they accept. Also more Doctors leaving the state and medicine. However, politicians never seem to learn and believe in "Blue Sky" and "fairyland" cures and plans. I'll probably read an article in the near future about the loss of Doctors in New York State.

You had a scale of 1-10 to indicate how much you agreed or disagreed with the saying. California: Political System is Worst Enemy
Brown was an idiot when he was elected in 1974. When Reagan left office the State of California had an 8 Billion dollar surplus in the bank; when Brown took over, he managed to spend that and so much more that they talked about issuing warrants remediable at some time in the future as income tax refunds. Prop 13 was passed because the politicians saw homeowners as a exploitable piggy bank; They would raise the percent tax rate one year and the property appraisal the next, the impounds for taxes were higher for many people than the principal and interest payment on their house. Not to word it too strongly but this experiment is a waste of time. I can understand the effort but the method is flawed. Any decision made by any conscious and critcal individual is going to come down to a myriad of factors that may or may not have anything to do with a belief in God...added to which, a decision made in a short period of time is far less likely to be processed from a religious moral standpoint and far more likely to be processed through current circumstances. Only people who are heavily burdened by the delusion of man made Gods would be influenced but doesn't that seem pretty...

Is The State Retirement Boom Finally Here?
And I'm planning on retiring next winter or spring. From the state that is, 'cause I won't be able to afford to RETIRE retire, but getting about half my present salary for leaving their employ is a pretty substantial incentive. Gas Tax Hard to Increase or Reduce
The problem in many states is that the gasoline taxes have NOT been used for road building and maintenance, but for every other "transportation" project that comes down the road. Rather than charge enough to cover costs, public transportation has been allowed to run at a loss and supported by the auto driving public instead of making it pay its own way. In California, at one time the gasoline tax by constitutional law was restricted to road building and maintenance, somehow the pols got that changed and were then able to raid those funds for every "feel good" public transportation project that...

Two people sitting at an airport, both dressed like pilots, but only one knows how to fly a plane. Does being dressed like pilots make both of them pilots? I think not, as being able to fly a plane makes one a pilot, although I suppose we could call a pilot in training a pre-pilot! LOL I don't think, however, that if one drops out of pilot school and has no intent to ever fly that they'd now be called a non-flying pilot, even if they do wear a pilot's uniform. Then again, I'm just a poor helpless dummy from Duke University, so what do I know! So on to non-op, pre-op, and post-op I go . . ....

Is The State Retirement Boom Finally Here?
Perhaps part of the problem is the number of people that put off retiring and thus clogging the promotion route for younger workers that should have been moving up into some lower management positions but couldn't because they were still filled by those eligible for retirement but were holding on waiting for things to improve OR for the state to make them a better offer.

Are Landline Phones and Regulation Obsolete?
Landlines will be with us for several years to come; a swtchover to cell would require a possibly lengthy transition. In the meantime, you can get ahead of events to find a solution now. You did not specify the depth of your deafness, so that affects your options. Cell phone accessories are available for those who have partial hearing boosted with a hearing aid. For those who cannot hear at all, there are vibration alarms and visual cues to help you send and receive mail. To deal with arthritic conditions, cell phones are available with more widely spaced (and raised) keys. This makes them ...

Congruence of Spirituality and Scientific Discovery
Cathryn, we have dozens of articles that directly or tangentially address spirituality and/or religion, often from within a scientific context. The mainstream press sometimes addresses these topics, often as a kind of sabbath or holiday season feature. We hear from readers who despair of finding continuing coverage of such topics on other sites. And if we limit the reaction to those dealing with pre- or post-correction struggles in life, they are put off by the alternating currents of defensiveness or hostility from people who consider their own position inherently right and settled. The la...

Congruence of Spirituality and Scientific Discovery
That we know we will all die in the end but still go on is far nobler than a life that believes that there is an afterlife. We are alive and that is meaning enough for the universe. Gender Roles and Precarious Manhood
That insecurity in a male's gender role leads to a violent "masculine" response helps explain a similar, widely observed phenomenon. Hence, we see the "closet case," who spends a great deal of time and energy seeking to harm the interests of gay men and associated groups. Every difference you can find with other transgendered people is an excuse for you to say "see, this proves I'm better than you. A TRUE woman wouldn't do that. A true woman would be specifically like me and me alone. But you are different. You are not a true woman." TG Politicians Stick It To UK Women
I know of one person that could NOT get surgery, neither SRS nor FFS due to her medical condition; She suffered from MG (don't ask me to spell it). With SRS, the surgeons, including ones in Thailand, refused to do the surgery on any one with her condition and the same even for FFS. She at one point thought she had both a surgeon and an anestheiologist lined up to do some FFS work on her (she didn't really need any in the opinion of several of her friends) and then they more than doubled the agreed upon price, moving it well beyond her ability to pay. They were all afraid that while under the a...

Myth 1. People have incurable medical conditions that are so impossible to manage that they would die if exposed to either a general or local anaesthetic so cannot have surgery. The list includes? Never published as won't stand up to peer scientific peer review. Myth 2. That Trans may indicate an underlying serious mental illness, a medical condition that talking can cure, thereby eliminating the need for surgery. The list includes? Never published as won't stand up to peer scientific peer review. Myth 3. It has to be a mental illness as I can't afford surgery and it wouldn't be funded o...

....ok So I should die now because my life as a woman impossible with a penis? Only my doctor and I know I have a penis. The world treats me like a woman. I am a woman. In every way save a couple ounces of ussless flesh between my legs, I am a woman. I have some serious medical issues. I will last anouther 5-6 years. All I was attempting to do was inject some humanity into the debate. This is not always a black and white world.

Ponderings of The Naked Agile Columnist
There are a lot of myths in the world, even some that pose as the truth. We don't need to look far back to find those. Al Qaeda attacked us on 9/11, We are backing Al Qaeda in this latest round of toppled governments. How much of what "we" consider truth is simply well orchestrated propaganda?

Ponderings of The Naked Agile Columnist
One of the things I could never quite understand during my father's final illness is why, when he got so he couldn't hit the toilet reliably, he wouldn't just sit down to pee. Indeed he claimed not to be able to pee sitting down. Then a good friend pointed it out as a classic case of Freudian castration anxiety. . . I guess this is one of the things ol' Doctor Freud was right about. It's also one of the many things about men that women born transsexual have absolutely no better handle on than our cisgender sisters. BTW, about capitalists: They have about as great a range as any other class ...

TG Politicians Stick It To UK Women
One of the classic socio-political arguments to justify the bogus theory of gender is what do we do about those on their death beds unable to have surgery. It is often accompanied by the poor victimhood sympathy card and I dismiss it as ludicrous. I know people (myself included) who were advised caution. What you do is find a way to get there (multiple local anaesthetics whatever it takes) you go through it because if your brain is female and your body male then you do whatever it takes and at whatever risk to correct. You have no choice it is not an aspiration, a desire, a fetish, a life-sty...

TG Politicians Stick It To UK Women
I am stuck with my penis. I can not get medical clearance for GRS due to multiple medical conditions. If I could get GRS I would be on the table yesterday. I am cursed to take a males body to my grave. So I am relegated to being a cross dresser/TG regardless of the fact I have been full time for quite some time now? I would love to have a vagina and good health to pursue a new life. That dream is denied me. Please do not call me a man.
