Funding Biomedical Research: Mending Walls
Greg Petsko is a front rank scientist with a proven track record. His research has broad and foundational effects across an array of discplines. He also understands the importance of collaboration, stymied in part by stovepiped funding.

Funding Biomedical Research: Mending Walls
I would guess that he never heard of the old saying "Good Fences make Good Neighbors". Another overlooked fault in his rock wall comparison is that often it wasn't so much to fence in yours and fence out theirs as a matter of removing rocks from the fields in which you were attempting to plow and plant crops. What else COULD you do with the rocks? In a fence was a good use. The fields of the eastern seaboard are ROCKY. A visit to England would show the same patterns of walls, both to remove the rocks from the fields and to fence in the sheep and cattle and prevent them from roaming. About the specialization in medical...

New Federal Rules Unsettle Insurance Regulators
Just what we needed, More numerous government agencies with all their resultant minions and workers to make up new regulations and spread the size and power of the Federal Government. Mostly run and over seen by the people that CAUSED the mess in the first place. I find the whole "Dodd-Frank" legislation to be questionable in the first place seeing that those two legislators are the ones that profited from underhanded dealings with Freddie and Fannie and got favorable treatment from the various loan companies they were SUPPOSE to be over seeing. Countrywide). They are ALSO the two that denied there was a problem with ...

Alabama Immigration Debate Heats Up
It's about time that this country got as strict on illegal immigrants and illegal immigration as do our neighbor to the South (Mexico) and as do other countries in the world. We, the American tax payers own no debt or obligation to illegal immigrants from other countries to provide them with free schooling, free medical care and other welfare benefits. There are laws and procedures in place for those that wish to immigrate to this country legally and these should and MUST be followed. Here's Mexico's laws on immigration: ***New Immigration Laws: 1. There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools. 2. All b...

Same Sex Marriage And The Church: The Words Of Lucian Kemble
Dear Sonya, we have deleted the offending comment and all other comments that discussed or alluded to the incident (except for those from you and me). We are deeply sorry that we allowed the comment from someone spoofing your identity to persist for so long. Please forgive our error; it occurred during a period of intense medical distraction. We have elevated our vigilance to ensure this will not happen again. We also have taken steps to minimize search engine awareness of the original comment. However, it will take more time for the various systems to catch up with the change.

States Pick Sides In Arizona Immigration Case
In the United States, there are three levels of authority: federal, state, and local. Strictly speaking, immigration law is one aspect of federal law (along with laws related to inland waterway navigation, diplomacy, military defense, and many others). Ordinarily, a state typically may pass laws to enable state actions under federal mandates for immigration and those laws become part of immigration law. Officials in the State of Arizona felt that federal officials were not enforcing existing federal law. States can not enforce federal law per se, so the Arizona legislature took the extraordina...

State Renewable Energy Funding Gets Creative
So far, most "green" energy companies have been a bust and without government (tax payer) money go bust or move to China. Without "rebates" to the homeowner, nobody would be buying i, just like the Chevy "Volt" which gets what a $7500 or $10,000 rebate and even then is beynd the reach of most Americans that have better sense than to buy one.

Removing Transsexuality from the Transgender Umbrella
For quite some time I've been refering to my forthcoming genital surgery as just corrective surgery. I suppose Stephanie's GCS is a better term than SRS, GAS (Gender Affrimation Surgery) or GRS (Gender Reassignment Surgery.) I'd rather think of GCS as Genitile Corrective Surgery, 'cause it doesn't have anything to do with gender, but everything with the stuff 'twixt the legs.

Removing Transsexuality from the Transgender Umbrella
I have tossed labels overboard. All labels do is create confusion because no one defines them the same way. I recently sent an email on a matrix approach using attributes to the admins of this site and it evidently got no traction. It was not definitive but simply a suggested beginning point for a different paradigm. The basic concept is simple. Let us not judge anyone but let us also recognize how each of us fits into socio/psychological/physiological constructs.

Removing Transsexuality from the Transgender Umbrella
I am so happy that TS-Si is up a going. I have for the longest time been an activist for the Transsexual community as well as being an extreme true Transsexual myself, now Post-op. It is even further amazing that I have found many Transsexuals, who refer to themselves as transgender. I advocate every day that Transsexuals should not call themselves transgender as they are improperly using a term without singular definition and therefore of many mixed socialized identities of other than a natural precise physical medical condition from birth. Many of the LGB centers designate the "T" as transgender (Adjective) rather...

State Spending That Isn’t Counted
My My, aren't politicians wonderful? They treat money from tax payers as if it belonged to the state in the first place and its an "expenditure" to let any remain with the taxpayer. Businesses need to be able to count on a stable tax code, NOT one which may change every year or every three years at the whim of legislature. Perhaps the key is to NOT spend on all the "programs" the politicians think will buy them votes; Perhaps its time to reduce the size of government and its workers. I love the line: "But it will leave out another way the state tries to fight hunger: by exempting food purchases from the state sales t...

Removing Transsexuality from the Transgender Umbrella
Forgive me if I pour some reality on all this but this needs to be said. Any new term we come up with to describe ourselves and gather under it's pennant will be taken over by the TG colonised from within by the transvestites etc. claming discrimination and hate if we refuse them entry. They will claim to be unique exceptions being nice at first and claiming all manner of axcuses as to why they cannot do what all the speakers here have done. Before you know where you are the TG will be controlling the new term. HBS was a prime example, taken over by some quite loopy and extreme charlatans. I'm delighted to see that F...

I called them out on their lies and fabrications. I tried to communicate the real differences between their desires to trans, (cross-over) gender, and our absolute NEED for access to those medical protocols so necessary for our very survival. The end result, after the usual barrage of derails and personal attacks on the messenger, was an all to real and concerted effort to destroy my life and all that I have worked for, by exposing my real-life, personal identity and long, long forgotten medical history: IE, outing. These people have no conscience nor do they have any scrupples. What they do have is a total comm...

Unfortunately in Europe the TG mafi has succeeded in having the TS downgraded to TGs as the Human Rights laws now make it impossible to separate out the two and anyone who is non-birth-gender-conforming is merely labled TG and its porbably illegal to state of a person that they are just TG. Maybe we need a better term for the true TS who leaves the TG world behind?

Removing Transsexuality from the Transgender Umbrella
Well Francesca I was delighted to find you as the author of this well written article. The situation in England is different in that we have a Mental Capacity Act that legally makes psychiatric intervention optional and a Gender Recognition Act that together with case law entitles anyone with a re-sexed birth certificate access to state funded genital surgery. However the Medical Establishment considers itself above the law so the DSM V proposals are most welcome as is your article as the queer political lobby has been very effective in PR terms at attempting to consolidate two opposing views of gender in that wom...

Removing Transsexuality from the Transgender Umbrella
I've been participating in a small, peer-based support group for some years. It's odd, while the group calls itself transgender, every single active member is transsexual and in some stage of transition. Once upon a time there were a couple of crossdressers and transgenderists which showed up with some frequency, but the last year or so, we've been effectively a TS-only group.

Removing Transsexuality from the Transgender Umbrella
Straight female here. I had long thought that the word transexual was a term referring to folks who were transitioning from one gender to another (FTM or MTF). Then I was told that transgender was the preferred term. I have NEVER heard of transgender being used in the context of men who lived as women, but didn't not self-identify as women or preferred their own anatomy. I thought those were transvestites. That might be where the 'bathroom boogeyman' came about, an argument often made against transgenders and transgender rights; that men would dress up as women to assault women and girls in the bathroom and loc...

TG is a non-treatable gender role issue. self-acceptance and societal change will help. they are not related. i also do not understand why TS has anything to do with the LGB community - it is not about sexuality. it is definitely time to break away and stand on our own. What the 2012 Nomination Fight Taught Us about American Politics
In 1964 what defeated Goldwater was an all out negative ad campaign smearing Goldwater and implying that if elected he would kill little girls picking flowers with an atomic bomb. They coupled that with claims that Goldwater would expand the war in Vietnam and LBJ would not; which was a complete lie as LBJ was already in the process of expanding the war and had already made plans to increase the troop commitment and justify it with "phony" attack claims. The final straw was LBJ and the Democrats waving JFK's Bloody Shirt (so to speak) at the Democrat convention. What a farce and what a moron that the voters elected Th...

Connecticut Revisits Old School Medicaid Financing
I would expect that organizations that PUSH the managed care products to oppose what CT has done; I would also suggest that CT needs to pass legislation limiting how much money medical tort lawyers can charge for helping people to sue. The excess of tests ordered by the Doctors is NOT due to greed on their part, but rather by a need to cover ANY possible avenue a greedy "personal injury" lawyer might try to file a claim under for NOT having been done. The other problem of course is that under the "managed care" systems and the control and lowering of fees finds Doctors unable to cover the clerical costs and the costs...

Santorum's Last Stand
All it proves is that someone with enough money can BUY an election and it PAYS to advertise over and over again. McCain pulled the same trick on his opponents and then was STUPID enough to forget the facts when campaigning against Obama who spent like he had a printing press (including from doubtful and over seas sources.)Of Course too, Obama reneged on the agreement he made with McCain to limit spending to the amount provided by government funds.

Santorum's Last Stand
Lincoln was a Republican who also tried to reform the Whig Party. He first ran for the approval of the Illinois legislature to become a candidate for the US Senate as a Whig in 1854, but withdrew for lack of support. Lincoln broke with the Whigs over the Dred Scott v. Sandford decision. In 1858, the Illinois state Republican party convention nominated him for the U.S. Senate and the stage was set for the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Lincoln lost, but he did so on principle, a fact that propelled him into the Presidency in 1860.

The contract programmers came and went as the wind (and job market) blew, then it would take a week or two getting their replacement up to speed. It would have been much, much, MUCHcheaper to hire limited-term people. At least the roster wouldn't have changed every week or so, and...

Transsexual Independence Day (22 March 2012)
In 2010 I wrote an essay that was published here on TS Si titled "The Transsexuxual War of Independance" It was not a war where people lob bombs or fire rounds across the trenches but a philosophical war fought by people able write down their thoughts on the new social media outlets such as private blogs and journals such as this one. I wrote essentially for my own blog about the issues that concerned me. Labor Shortages Lead To Business Support For Undocumented Workers

A Quaker Explains the Assault of Transgender Politics on Transexual Medical Needs
The fundamental problem for those whose brain sex is different to their anatomy is the anatomy and the problem would be there even if the binary socio-political model was scrapped by removing all sex markers/identifiers on documents etc. It would be there if children were brought up gender neutral. Either the penis can be tolerated by a female sexed brain or it cannot and the only person able to answer that is the person affected. If they cannot tolerate that or worse the later combination of penis plus full testosterone flow (if forced on them) they will seek appropriate surgery and that is a silver bullet for th...

A Quaker Explains the Assault of Transgender Politics on Transexual Medical Needs
The focus on 'wrong body' and the need to have sex reassignment is the fundamental flaw in this analysis. The 'wrong body' construct is the basis of the pathologisation, discrimination, fear, etc of Trans*people and the need (requirement) for them to be normalised to meet society's binary models of male/female and man/woman. Surgery is not the silver bullet that ends the medical condition. It is only part of the process of transitioning to one's true identity. Learning to live in one's true identity continues probably for the rest of one's life. However, I do acknowledge that where people are able to start their tran...

A Quaker Explains the Assault of Transgender Politics on Transexual Medical Needs
Excellent article Maggie. The big problem I see is the concept of gender identity forced on us by the transgender supporters. They believe gender is not binary but fluid and I actually agree which makes any diagnosis of gender identity disorder a contradiction since the disorder is supposedly binary. The correct term was and should be sex identity disorder because those of us having the misfortune to be born transsexual have a contradiction between our brain sex and our physical sex that is totally unrelated to gender since gender is cultural and how one presents which is perfect for, you guessed it, the transvestit...

Thanks, BUT I think when I want to lose weight I'll stick with the Dr Atkins diet system; most of the "low calorie and low fat stuff have increased levels of sugar to make up for the loss of flavor from removing the fat.

Laffer Version of Supply-Side Economics Stages Comeback
Of course all the DEmocrats and other big government spenders favor Keynesian economics which have been proven over and over to be abject failures resulting in fewer jobs, less revenue to the government and higher taxes and have a strangling effect on the economy. Laffer economics works, prosperity, more jobs, higher tax revenues even though the rates are lower. The claim about the states with no income taxes IGNORES the fact that the biggest drag is the FEDERAL taxes on companies. Those calling Laffer "junk" of ciurse are pushing their own brand of nonsense of a variation of Keynesiam policies which have a much long...

Error Code
Perhaps it is appropriate they are called error codes, since specialists can encourage the propagation of error throughout the general populace (;->

Error Code
Beep Code is the term used for an audio signal emitted by a computer to signal the outcome of a diagnostic test performed by a computer when ot first powers up. This is called the POST (Power-On-Self-Test), which is a small program in the computer's Basic Input/Output Operating System ( BIOS ). What if I'm hard of hearing? Also who invented all those little cryptic messages and error codes that pop up and when you try to look them up the answer is all in gobbledygook nerd computerese that means nothing to the average user.

Upper Class Scofflaws Driven By Greed
Not when the source is and has long been known to be a source for prejudicial "research and papers". Use to live in California and saw what comes out of that school. As we both know, the methodology and data collected can be distorted to fit the predetermined conclusions of the author(s); Have we NOT seen that enough in "studies" regarding TS issues.
-
Upper Class Scofflaws Driven By Greed
That is an argument against authority and ignores the actual research topic, methodology, and data collected to support their conclusions. It is far better to engage with the work then simply dismiss it out of hand because of a stereotypical view of the source.

So It Has Come To This
If I ran out of CAT food, I'd be in SERIOUS trouble with TWO pussy cats, The old Tom Cat, Mozart, would start by sitting in the doorway between the kitchen and the dining room complaining BEFORE getting up on the table by my laptop and getting pesonal; Missy Kitty would attempt to trip me everytime I walked into the kitchen. I'd be FORCED to leap into my car (along with Jessie our dog) and drive at a high rate of speed up to the local Walmart and load up a cart with Cat Food of their preference.

When is a Temporary Tax Increase Really Temporary?
Sadly, the problem is that tax increases do NOT force the state to reduce spending in many instances and fail to bring the increased revenue projected when the tax was proposed. That happened in Illinois and the real result has been that those able to flee and industry have been moving OUT of the state. Governments refuse to reduce spending and to reduce welfare handouts; They then target the "upper income" people that do the most to create jobs. Why has it become acceptable in this country to treat some people differently from others, particularly in terms of taxes. Where in the Constitution does it say that some are...

Upper Class Scofflaws Driven By Greed
And it was done by: Paul Piff, a doctoral student in psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. Other coauthors of the study are UC Berkeley psychologists Dacher Keltner, Rodolfo Mendoza-Denton and Daniel Stancato, UC Berkeley is a left leaning institution and I would NOT trust ANY such study coming out of it; especially out of the "Psychology" School and its minions.

So It Has Come To This
You raise up your head and you ask 'Is this where it is?' and somebody points to you and says 'It's his' and you say 'what's mine?' and somebody else says 'well what is?' and you say 'Oh my god am I here all alone?' -- Bob Dylan,Mr Jones

So It Has Come To This
So a shy guy sees a attractive female person. Shy guy: "Hi, I'm Joe" Attractive female: "Hi, I'm Liz" awkward silence Shy guy: "So... it has come to this.." Attractive female: "Uh.. what?"

Upper Class Scofflaws Driven By Greed
The data initially were drawn from the Berkeley area and involved academics/students. However, this as a big project that had highly diversified sources nationwide. As the article says: "the researchers surveyed the ethical tendencies of more than 1,000 individuals of lower-, middle- and upper-class backgrounds."
-
Upper Class Scofflaws Driven By Greed
How much of the data group drawn from the San Francisco Bay Area (which includes Berkeley obviously)? If so, the study is skewed to a more politically and socially liberal population than that of the United States. Was the source of the non-rich data the students at the Berkeley Campus and the upper class data cherry picked. I would not take the data and conclusions at face value.

The Fungibility of Reality
I've historically tried to vote for the least anti-freedom candidate. ('Cause actual pro-freedom candidates with a chance of winning are about as common as honest lawyers.)
-
The Fungibility of Reality
All I ask as an American Citizen, Voter, and Veteran is that the Government whether controlled by the Democrats or the Republicans follow the Constitution and the limits imposed within it on the scope of the Federal Government; That ALL laws enacted by Congress and signed by the President apply to them equally with NO exclusions and that "serving" in Congress not become a lifetime career for lawyers and that ALL legislations, laws and regulations have a sunset built into them. Why did we "need" 60 or 8o THOUSAND new laws and regulations this last year? As far as "law" it applies; A TRANSGENDER =/= a Female or Woman Th...

The Fungibility of Reality
Deckard: She's a replicant, isn't she? Tyrell: I'm impressed. How many questions does it usually take to spot them? Deckard: I don't get it, Tyrell. Tyrell: How many questions? Deckard: Twenty, thirty, cross-referenced. Tyrell: It took more than a hundred for Rachael, didn't it? Deckard: [realizing Rachael believes she's human] She doesn't know. Tyrell: She's beginning to suspect, I think. Deckard: Suspect? How can it not know what it is? -- Blade Runner (1982)

Study Says Recruiting Effective Teachers Requires More Diverse Data
It certainly doesn't help that teachers traditionally come from the bottom third of ANY college graduating class and many of them majored in "education" which taught nothing of the HARD subjects such as Science, Chemistry and Math. In Grade school I know I was smarter than several of my teachers; same thing in High School and sadly, even in Junior college.

Gambling Revenue Promises Rarely Met
Has ANY state EVER been correct about any projection of revenue, be it from Lotteries or tax increases? Heck, they can't even project spending and costs correctly, usually underestimating them by a factoros at least 50%.
