Washington, DC, USA. The federal health law’s controversial Medicaid expansion is expected to add billions to states’ already overburdened Medicaid budgets. But it also offers a rarely discussed cost-cutting opportunity for state corrections agencies.

Starting in 2014, virtually all state prison inmates could be eligible for Medicaid coverage of hospital stays—at the expense of the federal government.

Other studies have found that women who break a hip are at higher risk for earlier death, but most of those studies concluded that the increased risk was not because of the fracture, but because of underlying health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, or diabetes.

Nutrition.Washington, DC, USA. The biggest overhaul to school lunches in the past 15 years is giving states heartburn. The federal government has mandated a healthier menu, and state and school officials are trying to figure out how to cope with the added costs.

Better nutrition for low-income kids is a cause that’s hard to oppose. Funding it and signing up more needy families are the big challenges.

Washington, DC, USA. The Obama administration is offering subsidized health insurance to people who have serious medical conditions — but the customers aren’t coming. Throughout the rancorous public debate over the national health law, two provisions have maintained broad public support.

One is the requirement that insurance companies let young adults up to age 26 remain on their parents’ policies. The other is a federally subsidized insurance plan for people whose medical conditions make them uninsurable in the private market.
