DNA Blueprints Guide The Construction Of Specific Human Structures
Chad Mirkin discusses using DNA to build a three-dimensional structure out of gold, likening the process to building a house. Starting with basic materials such as bricks, wood, siding, stone and shingles, a construction team can build many different types of houses out of the same building blocks.

Fairfax, VA, USA. Seventy percent of President-Elect Barack Obama’s Black Support in California voted to ban gay marriage. Raised in the fundamental Protestantism of the black community churches, almost three quarters of the black voters in California indicated their hypocritical opposition to equal rights for all Americans. To expect them to vote otherwise is symptomatic of the failure of the liberal movement to effect real, long lasting changes in the political and social structures of the United States.
The progressive rose colored assertion that we are all brothers and sisters under the skin has been proven false once again. The recent vote in California demonstrated that the assumption that the liberal coalition would do “what is right” (if given the chance) is misguided.
Over sixty percent of all Californians supported Obama (the African American support was over ninety percent): over seventy percent of the black vote chose to ban same sex marriage. [N1]
The fabled liberal coalition, built on an academic façade of equality and brotherhood, has feet of clay. Beneath the skin, we all harbor blind prejudices and ignorance. Black America is no different, their skin does not canonize them with sainthood. Why would we think otherwise?
For decades, centuries even, the progressive movement has argued that liberal America exists as a unified block, workers and academics, politicians and voters, the salt of the earth, keepers of the true flame, if not the grail. That argument is no longer operative, if it ever was.
The election of Barack Obama changes nothing. The same churches that support social changes that agree with their philosophies oppose those that clash with their sexual mores. Liberation theology applies to true believers only, non-believers need not apply. The peoples of The Book would have us all follow their gods and preachers or burn us all in hell.
I will take a reformed Catholic any day -- a lapsed Mormon, a runaway Baptist, a good old-fashioned founding father Deist – over a liberal who speaks the words but only looks out for himself when he walks. At least the apostate is honest about who he is.
The liberal amazement at the outcome in California is astounding. Their core belief in the innate goodness and fairness of humanity has been demonstrated to have serious, fundamental defects. The coalition is a myth, a political slogan, a religious belief not to be questioned – except it has been.
Now what are we going do about it?
A safe assumption is that queers can no longer count on the progressive movement to spearhead the drive for equal rights. When a liberal (or any political party it would seem) has to chose between the queer community and obtaining and then retaining power, power wins. Always. Absolutely.
Liberal white guilt will preclude any serious discussion of the anti-gay bias within the black churches (although the same liberal whites have no problem attacking the Catholic Church for holding the same opinions). Likewise, that same guilt has blocked white liberal criticism of the black community, its family structures, its views on education, its wide ranging homophobia and racism.
The American black community repeatedly exhibits vocal racist attitudes towards other minorities. Their blind dislike of Asians (Koreans in particular) is well known. Their rabid distrust of Hispanics is unsurprising and widespread.
Why is anyone surprised by black opposition to equal rights of gays? Having got theirs, the black community does not see the need to share. Progressives should be overjoyed: the African American community has achieved equality with other true Americans, full of themselves, homophobia and racism.
Black pulpits are filled with fundamental preachers chanting verses from The Book that purport to condemn homosexuals. In a world where Sodom and Gomorrah are historical products of God’s anger, homosexuals are a sinful abomination and men and women born with Harry Benjamin Syndrome (HBS fka transsexuality) are just an elaborate species of cross-dressing transvestites.
The progressive coalition is a joke, an unsubstantial grouping of political convenience that quickly dissolves into its constituent parts when the rubber hits the road . [N4] When the going got tough, the liberal coalition – at least its black constituency – ran.
The queer community should not blindly expect unilateral, unwavering support from the progressive movement. Homophobia strikes deep.
Nor should the queer community unquestioningly support the progressive agenda. There needs to be a quid pro quo. We will support those pieces of the liberal movement that visibly prove their support for the queer community at the voting booth.
If that means withholding support for the black civil rights movement until such time as the black community supports equal rights for gays, lesbians, and transsexuals and the inalienable right of any two Americans, regardless of the sex, to marry under the laws of the United States and the several states, so be it. There is no such thing as a free lunch, not even if you are black.
Our ancestors, queer and straight, died to free the slaves. Four hundred thousand Americans gave their lives so that all men can be free. A hundred and fifty years later, that debt is paid in full.
It’s time we demanded something in return.
Notes [N1] According to the California Secretary of State, 61.9% of Californians supported Obama for President in the recent election (out of 7,338,133 votes cast). Proposition 8, which eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry, passed with 52.2% (out of 6,237,356 votes cast). Exit polls showed that 94% of African Americans supported Obama; 70% chose to ban same sex marriage.
For reportage by television networks and other media outlets, the Associated Press (AP) provided vote totals that were analyzed in light of exit interviews by Edison Media Research (EMR). The interviewers asked voters for their opinion on the issue, determined how they voted, and collected demographic data to allow analysis of group voting patterns. The results were anayzed using scientifically selected representative precincts. A number of commentators resist inferences that black voters should receive special attention for their support of Proposition 8. For instance, Kate Kendell of the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), issued a statement on 14 November 2008. She stated that. The scapegoating of African-Americans in particular, has the potential to do us real damage in the long run. A sad fact is that the often-quoted number of 70%—the figure by which black voters passed Prop 8—is terribly exaggerated and the figure is likely much closer to 57%, which is consistent with all earlier polling. Ms. Kendell offered no documentation for her claim.
