TS-Si Shakes Conventional Wisdom With Focus On Transsexual Issues
Springfield, Virginia, USA. May 22, 2006. The Transsexual Symposium, Inc. (TS-Si) announced formation as a non-profit organization with headquarters in the Washington, DC area.
Transsexuals face serious obstacles to public acceptance, medical treatment, & legal protection as they transition into society. TS-Si will focus on these issues with an innovative and non-partisan program for change.
The Transsexual Symposium brings a unique perspective to the gathering public debate on gender expression.
The TS-Si founders have insisted in public forums that public policy should have a firm scientific basis and clearly separate innate gender, anatomical sex, and social presentation. At a meeting with supporters of the organization, Lisa Jain Thompson, President and a TS-Si co-founder, outlined the organizational mission. She stated that "We are here to help transsexuals as they transition into society and provide a long-needed correction to preconceptions that unfairly bias social development, public policy, and service delivery."
TS-Si has documented routine media distortions that permit social and religious preconceptions to bias reporting and discourage public acceptance. "What does any of this have to do with the actual situation?" asks Sharon Gaughan, "TS babies are born into every culture, without regard to ethnic origin, race, religion, income or social class, or any other arbitrary social classification." Gaughan is a TS-Si Co-founder and serves as Vice President and Executive Director of the new organization.
"Unfortunately", Gaughan went on, untreated "transsexuals die at alarming rates from careless living, suicide, & murder. Those who do not die a physical death face the likelihood of a death-in-life with severe emotional & mental disturbances."
Initial responses to the TS-Si formation have been resoundingly positive. -- "Thanks for doing this! It's an incredible project and I know that it will help many!" from a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has worked extensively with transsexual clients. -- "I can tell the project will be enormously valuable. Certainly it is the most realistic and sensible approach I have seen so far." from a lawyer who handles equal opportunity cases on behalf of a major US government agency.
Upon its formation, the Transsexual Symposium released two new major websites.
The parent site at http://www.ts-si.org is the focal point for policy announcements, organizational activities, and fundraising.
The TS Policy Review (TSPR), located at http://www.ts-policyreview.org, provides breaking news & fact-based commentary, with analysis of legislation & policies that affect transsexuals.
The TSPR site also provides an innovative wire service called the TSPR News Service that syndicates news, features, and other content to the press and media outlets around the world.
The Transsexual Symposium has publicly stated the need for a clear focus on transsexuals that eliminates political partisanship and unrelated social wants from the discussion. TS-Si also questions the current reliance of transsexuals on "transgender" initiatives to guarantee their care and rights under the law. Transgenderism, a socio-political designation, is an umbrella term used by activists to generalize about people who exhibit alternative modes of gender expression in dress and manners.
In the face of what some might consider a daunting challenge, Thompson summed up the TS-Si commitment by stating that "We cannot stand by while people suffer for no good reason." Gaughan added that "We have the experience, support from key members of the community, and sophisticated technology at our disposal to support our outreach efforts." Both agreed that TS-Si is here to stay. "We are in it for the long haul."
