Questions Without Answers, Theories Without Clothes
HI Lisa I really like your article on Intersex of being a mixture of both genders, I am a 53 year old male who was born with some abnormalities in my testicular movements thru the canal. Undecended testicle,, One testicle was never functioning and finally removed. As a child I thought my feelings were a nasty trick played on me by nature. As a child I always thought I would become a woman when I grew up. Thinking my body would self correct. My father noticed these traits I had and tried beati...

If A Man Loves A Woman, Should He Give Her A Gun?
Being your ex-roommate we always were on the same side of the political fence. The Constitution and the writings of our founding fathers are very clear on this issue. Take care, good to see you again.

If A Man Loves A Woman, Should He Give Her A Gun?
I spent part of my childhood on the farms of Iowa. By the time I was 8 I was a marksman with a BB gun and .22 long rifle, and could handle a 410 and 12 gauge shotgun. During my 20 year Naval career, I qualified on the M15, 12 gauge shotgun, and became a marksman with the Colt 1911A1 .45 pistol. I have fired the M60 .50 cal machine gun, grenade launcher, M16, and AK-47. I hit what I shoot at. I learned from an early age proper gun safety. I've never had to shoot anyone, but I had to make up my mi...

If A Man Loves A Woman, Should He Give Her A Gun?
I was raised around guns (rifles)

xkcd loves the Discovery Channel. Boom de Yada!
I love this page....... nothing quite like reading xkcd over a cup of coffee. It goes good with domestic short-wave radio in the morning. I love Transistors also but even better vacuum tubes and things that glow in the dark, and when they are made with loving hands they have a soul.

If A Man Loves A Woman, Should He Give Her A Gun?
This ruling the Supreme Court handed down smells rotten.... The Second Amendment applies to all Fifty States, the ruling appears to be centered on DC. What stinks about the ruling is it an affirmation of the conversion of a right into a privilege. Moving from The People's Republic of Kalifornia (California) to Texas was a relief, Texas has a Castle law anyone trespassing for the purposes of doing harm to life or property is subject to the use of deadly force. People carry guns in Texas I felt ...

Twisting Scripture: Political Jesus and Harry Benjamin Syndrome
I do believe we need a timeout at this point. Both of you, put your head down on your desk for ten minutes.

Twisting Scripture: Political Jesus and Harry Benjamin Syndrome
My Mother was excommunicated for the reasons stated and the priest concerned WAS a Bishop and all other references are a matter of recorded history. I was not suggesting Diane that you were forcing your faith on anyone, Margaret Grubbaker may perhaps Be accused of that but not you or for that matter me. Neither was I attacking you or your beliefs. I say again if your Faith brings you comfort I hope it may always be so. Incidentally, because my Mother was a child born out of wedlock, the Catholic...

Twisting Scripture: Political Jesus and Harry Benjamin Syndrome
I think perhaps some facts need to be mentioned in lieu of the misinformation given by another. A priest cannot excommunicate, only a bishop can do that and only after some serious violation of cannon law or a blatant and often public denial of Catholic doctrine. Seems to me that most organizations deny membership to those that disagree with their policies or is that ignored and this false issue is being used to attack religion once again? I attended a wedding where both a Catholic priest an...

Finding Renewed Faith In Optimism, And The Perils Of Despair
and when I do I stop on this page and read this article again and your other stuff. I recently moved quite a distance to a new city. When I got there I checked to make sure ts-si was still here. Strange idea, right? Anywhere, Sharon's column is still here and still give me shivers down my unworthy masculine spine. Bless you, lady. Harry

The Woman Who Became A Man Who Became A Woman
As a counter part to this person getting pregnant; let's consider the other side of the coin, a MtF "TS" that decides he is Female, lives as a female full time but elects to keep his testicles and penis and then impregnates "her" cis female partner; could the claim be made that a "Female" was the Father of baby-- I don't think so and in this case, retention of the ovaries, uterus and a desire to become impregnated says loudly that this person is still a FEMALE and at best a cross dresser.

Twisting Scripture: Political Jesus and Harry Benjamin Syndrome
I have to smile when the subject of religion comes up. My Catholic Mother was excommunicated (condemned to hell) because she had the temerity to marry an Anglican and refused to bring her children up Catholic but instead to offer us children a choice in the matter. I have a serious issue with the actions of that Priest. It affected my Mother for the rest of her life as she was raised in an orphanage by Catholic nuns. The three Jewish or Old Testament founded religions all contain excuses for suc...

The Woman Who Became A Man Who Became A Woman
...... If HBS men and women (FNA transsexual) can keep their sexual organs present at birth, the category does not exist. We are merely an extreme form of cross-dressing/transvestism as Dr. Blanchard says. How would society tell the HBS/transsexuals from the crossdressers? Are HBS/transsexuals some special case that we can be taken at our word? We can lie just as well as any crossdressed who is being placed under arrest. No man that I have ever met has expressed an actual physical desire ...

The Woman Who Became A Man Who Became A Woman
I am sorry for intruding on your group but I was surfing by and found this article and I feel some of your facts need to be corrected. I apologize if this offends you but you should be basing your opinions on the truth in this and all matters. I am a FTM transsexual, that is my label, I can use HBS in reference to you if you would like. First this is not the first case of FTM pregnancy, though I agree it is unusual. I personally know of 4 cases including Thomas's. This is in no way new. The fir...

Twisting Scripture: Political Jesus and Harry Benjamin Syndrome
OK, MY turn. Here's how I feel about the whole religion affair. I'm not very religious, but I do believe that a religon should not be attacked, unless it causes harm (such as Jim Jones' cult, or the muslim fanatics). It's one thing to fire back at some stupid, condescending, loudmouthed fundie, such as Grubaker. People like that (including my brother, who in the past has acted like a stupid bigoted fundie), use religion to validate their own bigotry, and failings. BUT, for people to attack...

Twisting Scripture: Political Jesus and Harry Benjamin Syndrome
Ahh, here's a subject that I can comment about. Keep n mind that Jesus was a Jew and as such was under the commandments of the Old Testament and the Covenant that God had made with the Jewish race. When he was rejected as the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament, crucified and died upon the cross, that ended the covenant with the Jews as the "chosen race" and effectively ended the old testament and started the New. Read carefully, one finds that many of the commandments of the Old Testament a...

Twisting Scripture: Political Jesus and Harry Benjamin Syndrome
As matter of record, if Jesus didn't come to change what was in the Old Testament, why aren't we all using Kosher dinnerware and cooking utensils? Oh yeah, he only came to put and end to the stuff we don't like, not the stuff we do like. Different strokes for different folks But I don't care what the Old Testament says, only what can reliably be attributed to Jesus (and not some centuries later interpolater). Sorry, but I behold the man, ecce homo and all that, not Mother Church (who taught m...

Twisting Scripture: Political Jesus and Harry Benjamin Syndrome
Is there any wonder why the confusion when some who claim to be HBS welcome attachment to the glbt and at the same time disparage religious people? Jesus never claimed to ignore the Old Testament. He instead said He came to clarify it and follow its teaching. Anyone who might pick and choose sections of the bible they agree with are simply doing exactly what they claim to be arguing against as exampled by Grubaker. They ignore what applies to them and follow that which they believe links them t...

Twisting Scripture: Political Jesus and Harry Benjamin Syndrome
It seems to be a human trait to confuse religion with spirituality. People love to do this because it is a way of concealing their agenda. Religion is a man made construct used to control behavior. Religion has as its core an agenda to create conformity and to support a physical infrastructure. That could be anything from a few stone age men sitting around a fire on the night of the full moon, chanting to the stars all the way to a worldwide religio-political engine that controls whole nations. ...

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
To be part of a 'Pride' event and allow your overall birth condition be connected to that of glbt pride says nothing to the public but that we are no different than a transgender and part of that construct. That is the message those on the outside see and not one I would convey.

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
So this "Loving Member of the Family Research Council" thinks that the genitalia God put between our legs is what makes us male or female, and that by saying that is not what we are that we are rejecting God-- How Sad and how little understanding of God and the Bible this poor judgemental person has. The original story of Adam and Eve says that God took EVE the woman from within Adam the man which to me would imply that "Adam" as created contained both male and female and because God made us in ...

US Capital Pride Images: Observations From The Booth
Lisa -- you make a good point about being an Antidote and rational counterweight to the TG propagandists and transgender booths. Perhaps I may have to re-consider my opposition to attending "Pride" events and see if I can't in the future round up enough HBS people that haven't drank deeply of the LBGT koolaid to staff a booth for HBS people and mayhap educate the general public. Sharon -- I've found that in most instances that with Washington and our government, we are better off when INaction...

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
I don't believe Jesus ever addressed the subject of HBS men or women but he did cure those who had physical, medical conditions such as Harry Benjamin Syndrome. Who am I to question his works. Likewise, I don't remember Jesus saying a single word about transgenders or crossdressers, but I do know that he had a documented fondness for prostitutes and personally asked married men to leave their wives and children and come hang with him in his posse. Jesus certainly didn't build himself a physica...

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
Trensgenders, do not insult Jesus Christ and God the Father by wearing clothes and adornments that intentionally misrepresent your sex for the purpose of immoral deception. If you dress as a man or woman to make yourself and others think you are the opposite sex, you sin against God. You reject who God made you to be and deceive God's children. You say "God, you made me a man but I resent and reject who you made me to be so I rebel and represent myself as the opposite sex". on't misuse God's...

US Capital Pride Images: Observations From The Booth
Washington, DC, after all, is one of the places where the action (or inaction) takes place (or not).

US Capital Pride Images: Observations From The Booth
We look at the Pride Fest as more of an outreach mission and a antidote to the various transgender booths. We had multiple people come to our booth and ask us why those men were in dresses over at the main TG booth. Our physical presence at the Pride Festival serves as a rational counterweight to the TG propagandists. If we weren't there, the transgenders would have free reign as they do in many other places.

US Capital Pride Images: Observations From The Booth
Although I don't support "Pride" affairs for reasons I've hopefully made clear elsewhere; I am Glad that things went so well for you. Perhaps a few learnt that A. We are NOT homosexuals, B. that we are really pretty ordinary folk and C. that we really what we say, female (or male) gender with a body that is wrong for us physically, in a word HBS. Well Done, now go soak your feet, rub icy hot on the aching muscles and enjoy yourselves. Pamela

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
Evangeline, I don't get you. I'm not a fan of Pride marches. I agree with Pamela that they give everybody the impression that we're all variations of homsexuality. I've people tell me this (as I'm sure many of us have). To say that it's tiring to tell people for the umpteenth time that "NO, I'm not a kissing cousin to Mr. Leatherboy over there," is putting it mildly. BUT, you have to do something Evangelina. I know you believe that by hiding in the background, and that just by being like ...

Our editorial did not address stealth per se. In fact, we at TS-Si fully understand the need for privacy and fight to protect it at all times. In fact, some of our participants and many of our correspondents have faced circumstances such as yours. We have articulated and reinforced our privacy policy any number of times. Speaking for both TS-Si and the TS-Si.org editorial board, our call to come out does not bring preconditions as to what that means in practice. We all - no matter what ...

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
Throughout my life, I have believed that I will come out on top. My Catholic education taught me that each one of us can make a difference. I believe that with every cell in my body. If I thought none of this mattered -- that I couldn't change anything -- if I really thought it impossible to make gentle the life of this world, I would end it now. But everytime I have failed at something, everytime someone has tried to put me down or tell me I couldn't do what I want to do, I have gotten bac...

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
It's all very well to talk of comming out and showing the world the kind of people we really are and no doubt there are some who may be quite happy so to do. Good luck to them and you have my respect. espite my knowledge that I am female although I had male sex organs at the tender age of 14 my Motrher wanted to take me to doctors to get me fixed. Not to correct the male defect but to correct my belief in my female sex identity. While I conformed to the desires of my parents all was well. As s...

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
Ray, I too was married and my husband, although he knew of my past, did not wish to deal with my past and would have preferred we simply ignore it. I did not have any tg or gay friends (had a few ts friends I met in NYC) so in that regard I never had to contend with the political stuff that obviously was in the developmental stages while I was living my life with my husband in North Carolina and working to get ahead. I wonder how you and Elissa deal with her past and if it comes to the forefro...

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
A voice of reason, once again. Thank you so much for being here and raising the bloody dialogue. You folks are the best and just get better. You are so far above the typical websites (TS, trannie, GL, etc.) that those kinds of visitors must get nosebleeds, only to find out that no, they do not have a clue. And Pamela, we are a married heterosexual couple. Elissa has HBS history but we both still look back and care. We love our homosexual and transgender neighbots. And yes, it is a pain to see ...

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
TS-Si is a mainstream moderate organization, working both sides of the political and social aisle. Capital Pride, as the name implies, is held in our nation's capital in sight of the capital building (at one end of the festival). The festival starts down by the Navy Memorial and works its way past various government buildings. 99% of Capital Pride is family oriented and corporate sponsored, attended by gay and lesbian families as well as straight families. There will be hundreds of young teena...

Pride 2008: In a time to come ...
Sorry, while I am proud to be a post-op woman with her HBS cured, I do not nor will not take part in any so called "Pride" event which is associated with homosexuality and "gay" rights. I am tired of having to explain that "NO, just because I am/was Transsexual does NOT mean I am a homosexual" yet in the pride events what is it that the "standard" person sees but a bunch of transgenders and other marching along with the GLB's and "leather boys" and simulated sex acts, etc. I steer clear of those...

All The President Men: Who Is Best for HBS?
Has Never entered into my decision on who i would vote for. I get accused a lot of "throwing my vote away" because I won't vote for the candidate who has blue eyes, has a vagina, screws around on his overachieving wife, or likes homosexuals. I vote for the person even if that means i have to write in his or her name. I voted for Dr Paul when he was on the Libertarian ticket, because he believes in what this country was founded on. I will vote for him again in November because frankly there isn'...

The Metabolism Of Uric Acid In Transsexual Persons
I am glad to see research like this taking place. One thing that strikes me about the study, however, is the apparently low doses of estrogen taken across the entire m2f sample. This is particularly notable, since the sample was apparently all pre-op (otherwise they would not be taking androcur, right?). Yet the dosages of estrogen seem considerably lower than for many of the post-op people I know -- certainly much less than mine. It makes you wonder about the Spanish protocols for HRT. Whose ...

All The President Men: Who Is Best for HBS?
I thought I had better chime in, lest readers get the impression that there is no such thing as an HBS liberal. I will vote happily for Obama for too many reasons to relate here. On HBS and civil liberties in general, I will support a party that occasionally disappoints over one that enthusiastically preaches and promotes social control, theocracy, and discrimination.

Will US States Topple The Electoral College?
I have yet to hear of any congressman that left office poorer than when he started and most of them are a damn sight wealthier. Many belong to "hedge Funds" which for some reason don't get taxed on their obscene profits (they average around 87% profit) and do recall that they are entitled to full pensions (so much better than Social Security like the common folk) along with many other "perks" whilst in office. Free flights around the world and someone else to pay the bill while they are "fact fi...

All The President Men: Who Is Best for HBS?
I use to regard myself as a (shhhhhhh) Republican, but with the picking of Dole to run, the poor performance of Bush and then the nomination of McCain, I find myself glad that I registered as "No Affiliation" although the truth be told, I am a Conservative and I admired Ron Reagan as both the Governor of California when he took over a troubled state and put it in the black (although the dim-witted Democrat that followed him put it almost into bankruptcy)and I admired him as President. I am NOT a...

Federated Identification, Legal Papers, and Transgender IDs
And Pamela, no matter how you where born you now are in tune both physially and mentally. You are not an abstraction or the discriptive ideal and understanding of someone else. You have crossed the path to reach the life to which you belonged. You, like many of us, do not hide our inner sex any longer, we live it to the fullest and hopefully we all do so without being equated with others who move in and out of gender variations. I am proud to know each and everyone of you brave women. iane

Will US States Topple The Electoral College?
Remember that the Presidential terms only became limited after FDR. I think limitations should also apply to congress as well and for much the same reason: limitation of power. Seems that our representatives have forgotten they are representing us. And it is not just money that attracts many to elected office but the lure of POWER. That is the danger of allowing someone to maintain a political stature for a lifetime or gaining advantageous options to gain wealth after leaving office. The Electo...

All The President Men: Who Is Best for HBS?
Personally I being a Libertarian by nature if not by party registration am relegated to the lessor of two dislikes. I would rather vote for Paul as I did in the primary but he and I have the same chance of being elected president as the tooth fairy. My primary interest is not a selfish ideal nor a singular argument of who should be our next president but on the top of my list is our energy policy and our dependence on foreign oil especially when we have more oil available at home than all the r...

Will US States Topple The Electoral College?
Term limits for senators and congressmen would place too much power in the hands of the executive branch. The senators and congressmen would be transients always playing catchup with the President and his adminstration. Every congressman would be a novice in the working of government as would each new senator. If the United States were a third world power without obligations, this might work. But alas, we aren't and never were, not even in Washington's administration. We don't have the luxury...

Will US States Topple The Electoral College?
Better still than that ( Yeah, I catch your "sarcasm") would be to term limit Senators and congressmen, One 6 year term for a Senator and two 2 year terms for the House of Reps. It would keep them from building so much personal "power"; also NO pension for them and no free medical care. The Congress was NOT meant to be a career of self enrichment. Charlie, you are right, there are a lot of people out there that aren't too bright, I once saw in California, a DEAD congressman get re-elected to th...

Will US States Topple The Electoral College?
I agree Pamela. We should do away with popular elections of Governors and Senators too. What do the people know anyway?

Will US States Topple The Electoral College?
Electing the President by "popular vote" has to be about the stupidest idea to come down the Pike. The electoral college was evolved and placed in the constitution so that small states with small populations had as much say in electing the President as a large state. This is an effort by one political party to win by simply registering more voters and it becomes MOBocracy not Democracy. Elections would become popularity contests much like the "rock star" type campaign of Obama. They never challe...

Worth Noting: Illinois roads to be roadkill-free again
I can relate to the story about roadkill. There is a county park for Bicyclists, roller-bladers and joggers called "Flatwoods" on the route of my morning commute to work; It has a large population of wild pigs, deer and other smaller game aninalls that tend to cross the roadway at just the wrong time-- We have a permanent fairly large population of Turkey Vultures that do the clean-up work and seem to be quite well fed. It usually takes a road crew 4 or 5 days to get around to picking up the rem...

Federated Identification, Legal Papers, and Transgender IDs
I have noticed that the ones that complain most about ID's are the CD's,TG's and the Gender Queer that have NO intention of ever transitioning completely including SRS. They want to live and present as "female" whilst retaining their male genitalia; ditto with the FtM TG's and CD's too. Look at that one twit that whilst "claiming" to be a "Transman" got pregnant so SHE could have a baby-- can you imagine issuing a "male" ID to something like that. I also read on another site about a "transsexual...

Federated Identification, Legal Papers, and Transgender IDs
Then it is with the CD's. At least this is the case in the larger cities. The hand full of CD's i have known have no issue with their identity, it's the trannies and the gender queers who want different ID's. The difference seems to be; The average CD has no problem admitting he is a man in a dress. The average TG lives in denial that he is a man in a dress. Maybe it is a regional thing.... maybe west coast CD's and Trannys are different then elsewhere. I have to agree; whats the big deal...

Federated Identification, Legal Papers, and Transgender IDs
Hi Lisa, With regards to the TGs and real ID - what's the big deal? Why are they getting all bent out of shape? Like you mentioned, they don't feel crossdressing is wrong, so why are they upset if somebody finds out they're crossdressing, or for that matter, one of the so called "non-op TSs." Gee most of us had to deal with the ID hassle when we were going through transition. Even having a drivers license with an F on it, will not necessarily prevent this. I know this first hand. In Oct. ...

Federated Identification, Legal Papers, and Transgender IDs
You hit the nail on the head, Lisa. A short tale: While in transition I was, along with a number of other drivers, pulled over at a highway road block. The police officer asked for my drivers license and automobile registration...normal procedure! When he looked at the license he told me to pull over to the side. Once there he asked me, "why are you using a males license?" I simply told him I was in transition and was scheduled for surgery in Sept. and required to live and work as a female but ...

Why So Much Jew Science? Said the Skinhead to the Dyke
You never know what is going crawl out from under the next rock. Speaking of Martians... They tell me they are not bigots although they like Canadians best of all, they say free-range Canadians are really tasty. Seriously though.... We all may be 99.999% the same genetically, that is no guarantee we are equal from a biological or emotional perspective. Genetic diversity, and environmental factors ensure survival of the species. Even Abdul has his role in the grand scheme of things. His genes...

Why So Much Jew Science? Said the Skinhead to the Dyke
I find the bigotry of 'Abdul' so offensive and usually would never answer in reply. I am 100% Irish ancestry dating back to the Viking settlements founded in Ireland. I even have some Spanish blood in the mix as evidenced by my Irish born great grandmother with the family name of Costello and who by the way was considered as black Irish with olive skin, black hair and blue eyes. She immigrated to this country from Ireland back in the 1800's; her daughter, my grandmother, married my Irish born g...

Life Post-Op: A Gentle Breath Fills My Sail, Sets Me Free
This column provoked a lot of comment, both here and in the forums. A lot of that comment was quite nasty, taking Lisa to task for living a life that many of them thought privileged and oppressive of others. It is very strange to us that some people can be so critical of folks who have a job (or, at least try to get one), look after their families, and participate in their communities. If they are revolutionaries of some sort, it makes me wonder what kind of society they would prefer. No matt...

Life Post-Op: A Gentle Breath Fills My Sail, Sets Me Free
I hadn't seen this particular article, having started reading TS-Si at a later date, but it does express quite well the feelings I enjoyed on seeing my children in the delivery room and holding one that was thrust into my arms before he was even cleaned up; what an instant bond that made. I cared for them, fed them and changed them, they are MINE. I find others little babies are adorable and I like to wave to them when they look my way, but I'm glad mine are grown and well beyond the dirty diap...

Universal Laws For Smell Hard-Wired In Brain?
Personally I fear not the man or woman behind science but those who seem to apply approval of science to their own judgemental, selective and bigoted contrasts. I fully agree with the smell attraction and must admit I always loved the smell of my husband. It seemed so enticing and even comforting to me often without my really fully understanding the why or how. Just was!!! iane

Freedom, Liberty, HBS, and the Seven Strands of Diversity
I am in total agreement with you all. Benjamin Franklin said it best with his statement when asked, (I paraphrase) 'What type of government do we have?'. His answer was that it was not a Democracy but a Republic. Too many seem to have forgotten that and do not understand what Franklin meant in the first place. Simply put a Democracy is a land governed by the oft whimsical majority and a Constitutional Republic is a land whereby the people give limited rights to government and only after strict ...

Freedom, Liberty, HBS, and the Seven Strands of Diversity
Somewhere in the early part of the twentieth century a Republic based on the Constitution of the United States was substituted for a democratic government. A democracy hallways leads to ether socialism or fascism. This happens when the "The people" realize that they can vote themselves their own welfare check, they also realize they can silence those who disagree with by enacting laws against or taxing those behaviors they find objectionable. Our forefathers gave us the tools to keep this fro...

Universal Laws For Smell Hard-Wired In Brain?
Why do I think you are a white guy hiding behind an Arab name? Because someone who studied the Qur’an would have cited Allah (Insha'Allah) or Mohammed to support their beliefs instead of Mein Kampf like you do. All science is good just as all racism is bad.

Freedom, Liberty, HBS, and the Seven Strands of Diversity
Well said !! I also fear those in power that would tax those that wprk and save to "equalise" incomes and to support those that don't work and illegal immigrants. I am a firm believer in the Constitution of the UNtied States and that all people are created equal which means they have an equal opportunity to work and improve their lot in life; not that they have a "right" to the income earned by the sweat of my brow and aching back. I desire to live a quiet life of a woman with a home to care f...

The Post-Op Experience: Our Own Best Subjects
My first experience was pre-op when my Doctor prescribed a really dose of Premarin along with Proscar (he said I had a benign enlarged prostate) and Spironolactone. On my next visit, I informed him that I wanted to switch to Estradiol and a higher dosage. It took some research and a letter, but I finally got him to prescribe 6 mg of Estradiol and 200 mg of Spironolactone, but to write the script for 8 mg of estradiol as I was going to lose my medical coverage due to divorce ( I didn't, in divorc...

The Post-Op Experience: Our Own Best Subjects
I agree that we are our own best subjects. Indeed, that sometimes is true even in fields where there has been more research. For example, I almost died a few days post-SRS due to a vaginal bleed that I now am pretty confident was related to an adverse reaction to Celebrex. Research suggests that my reaction was very rare. But somebody gets to be the rare one. I now hasten to mention the allergy whenever I seek treatment. Hence, not all of us are in the bell curve on everything. This, together t...

Molecular Scaffold Guides Connections Between Brain Cells
I must agree with Lisa, Sharon and Pamela. It is fact that the brain sex is formed before the actual physical sex is it not? That being the case then how would any rewiring/correction of the brain be possible to match the body when the brain gender has already been established? I think I also see where Kelly is leading though. I assume she is stating that if there was a means of connecting the dots before or immediately after the fetal wash and be able to examine for faults in that process the...

Molecular Scaffold Guides Connections Between Brain Cells
Given the general lack of knowledge about the inner workings of the brain and how intelligence, and thought processes all link I think someone attempting to mess about in the brain of an unborn child would be like an enraged bull in a china shop with very small crowded aisles. There is always some Doctor that wants to or would want to play "GOD" with about as much grace and knowledge as the old barber doctors that thought bleeding the patient dry would "cure" everything-- mmm, guess it did, ble...

This War, This President, My Son, And The Corps
Sorry, but I grew up with a closeness to WW2 with a father in the US Navy, stationed on Ford Island not far from the Arizona and I have seen all and more of the combat films they use to show on "Victory at Sea". I was too young for Korea, but in retrospect have looked at what happened there and saw how politics resulted in removal of the best General and how filtering the pursuit of the war through a "World Wide" body resulted in difficulty keeping any plans secret. Then we reached Viet Nam; Vie...

Molecular Scaffold Guides Connections Between Brain Cells
This discussion raises some interesting points. I'd like to take up three of them. 1. The Science Of Us. Over time, we have seen work on the gradual (and arduous) unfolding of the entire end-to-end process that starts with the pre-conditions for conception and ultimately results in, well, us. The article under discussion, Molecular Scaffold Guides Connections Between Brain Cells, is a very important contribution to the foundation science that illuminates human deve...

Molecular Scaffold Guides Connections Between Brain Cells
Alright, let me try again. How in the world did this get so off target? My original observation was envisioning the wonderful possibilities of this newly developing area of brain science. Male bias aside, this new research finding opens the door to an entire new vista in brain science pertaining to structure and function. This is the very environment in which HBS presumes itself to reside. Taken for granted that all the available research evidence regarding HBS to date is true, what might t...

Molecular Scaffold Guides Connections Between Brain Cells
it was about being able to prevent or preempt the brain from developing in conflict with the body so we wouldn't have to suffer with our dilemma. As pointed out before, this shows the male bias as the brain develops first, better would be to prevent the body from developing as a male so that IT matches the brain not vice versa.

Molecular Scaffold Guides Connections Between Brain Cells
Lisa, In general, as you stated, you're probably right but honestly I don't keep up with the current state of treatments or what may be a common theme amongst male psychiatrists. My diagnosis took place in 1977 in what I presume were significantly different circumstances from those that exist today. However, since it was an earlier time, there was almost certainly a prevailing 'good ol' boys club' mentality at work to a large degree. I can't speak for Dr. Pauly's motivations, only my percep...

Molecular Scaffold Guides Connections Between Brain Cells
"Dr. Ira Pauly, my HBS diagnosing psychiatrist, has stated that he would rather there were some method of aligning the brain to the body than the now conventional method of body to brain." Psychiatrists, and doctors in general, are almost always prefer to treat something they are comfortable with. In the case of Psychiatrists, that is the mind, whether or not treatment of the mind (normally through sessions and medications) is the best solution for the patient's good. Male psy...

Molecular Scaffold Guides Connections Between Brain Cells
What a fantastic article! Two thoughts come immediately to mind: 1. How might this discovery, and its (presumed) subsequent development and maturity, affect HBS? It has been advanced that the hormonal wash during the third trimester of gestation affects the 'hardwiring' of the brain. If this is so, how might future glial therapy(ies) be able to reverse or help HBS affected individuals. r. Ira Pauly, my HBS diagnosing psychiatrist, has stated that he would rather there were some method of...

Editorial: Professional Case Studies And HBS
No doubt - this is a cool way forward. This is one of the best intiatives I have heard about. If we don't build the evidence base it is our own darn fault. Btw, I love the way you folks push the envelope but always keep it real. For some places one good idea per year is enough. Most of the others dont have any at all. You people are on the mark most every day. Thanks for being here. Gar

We Never Said We Were Saints: Queers and Crossdressers and HBS
from South Pacific: You've got to be taught To hate and fear, You've got to be taught From year to year, It's got to be drummed In your dear little ear You've got to be carefully taught. Once upon a time, in a land far far away, a young woman was in transition. Split from family and friends in an unfamiliar place. Her life turned upside down, she desperatly sought allies and in her naivity assumed that the most likely allie would be amongst those that were also repressed. When she went to cal...

We Never Said We Were Saints: Queers and Crossdressers and HBS
A very interesting article and some good points made.

Including Women And Gender in Disease Incidence and Treatment
Nancy, many of us have volunteered for similar studies but have to date been refused. Those like Dr Milton Diamond did make a request to the HBS group I belong to and asked if if we would be part of his study. Many of us did just that. I was also part of the John's Hopkins Study back in the 60's and never heard any mention of it in medical journals or even articles. That study though was not done at JH but instead involved those under the direct treatment of Dr Benjamin who always thought us to...

Including Women And Gender in Disease Incidence and Treatment
How do we get women like us in these studies? Wouldn't that make sense? Nancy

DSM-V: Annotated List Of TS-Si.org Articles (Update)
One of my dearest friends is a forensic psychiatrist who currently is at the top of the profession and refuses to join the APA due to the politics and control issues. We have discussed the current flap over the DSM V and both conclude there is a hidden agenda at work. By jettisoning the medical model and elevating AG as THE diagnosis the eventual end of most SRS will follow. AG as the official causality removes all medical justification for hormone and surgery as treatments. Zucker and Blanc...

The Human Genome And HBS: An Opportunity For Further Study
Welcome, Sue, and thank you for your suggestion. You said Prospective subjects should be screened for other genetic birth defects for obvious reasons. We have acted on your suggestion and included a separate statement on pre-screening criteria under Constraints (Item 3). Regards, Sharon

The Human Genome And HBS: An Opportunity For Further Study
Prospective subjects should be screened for other genetic birth defects for obvious reasons. I did see no mention of that in the proposal. There are a siginificant number of us who were borne with other congenital birth defects that may muddy the results.

The Know-it-all Men Of The APA: Ray Blanchard
Very well put Holly, though I would add one caveat for clarification regarding your statement: So when a patient presents WANTING medical sex reassignment it should be done immediately 'Wanting' and 'needing' are two very different things; each is distinct and seperable from the other. The HBS patient, through need, develops want (a strong, overwhelming desire to be corrected and made whole). Both are present. Autogynephiliacs, as another example (if we are to believe the theory) develop n...

Why Do Women Wait So Long For Knee Replacement Surgery?
I am so glad for you that a solution came your way. I would agree that osteorthritis is not exclusively as disease of age. However, it is predominantly one that strikes older people, especially women. However, health statistics show that the lower bound for age is dropping and reports of teenagers are not uncommon. The whole matter is complicated by obesity, which may be a major contributing factor. Let's hope we can find a cure. Sharon

Why Do Women Wait So Long For Knee Replacement Surgery?
First of all I totally disagree that osteoarthritis of the knee being a disease of age. I was only in my 30s when I first noticed it and started feeling the pain and I was only in my 40s and nearly crippled when I had both knee replacements done. Hearing that this disease mainly effected the elderly, deterred me from seeking helping that could have prevented further damage and pain to my knees. I had my first surgery in 2006 and it was not good, very painful, slow recovery and 6 months I had de...

The Human Genome And HBS: An Opportunity For Further Study
Hello there, Zoe - thank you for your questions. You asked Should the study exclude those already diagnosed with Intersex conditions of known etiology? Or should they be recorded, but tagged separately? 1. The study we propose is intended as a controlled start at a more rigorous examination that quite clearly should extend to those individuals with Intersex conditions of known etiology. 2. A professional and well-executed research effort would develop a census of potentia...

California Gay Marriage Ruling Sparks New Debate
Maude Gonne is one of Sharon's relatives. The Rising was a family affair, the Tower, a place to escape from. Sharon, however, married her poet.

California Gay Marriage Ruling Sparks New Debate
We welcome this discussion. A civil dialogue is precisely what is missing in so much of the public debate over marriage. You may be interested in this TS-Si Editorial: The Overlap Between Civil Unions And Religious Marriage http://ts-si.org/content/view/2194/995/

California Gay Marriage Ruling Sparks New Debate
Thank you so much for your wonderful story, a kin to our own. You said: P.S. note for Sharon Gonne. Is that an Old Gael nomen that tinkles in out ears? There are as you in our kindred's town nearby. 'tis so - Maude Gonne is my ancester on my father's side. People say I bear her likeness, but weathered now and ne'r so pretty in the first place. But oh we share the spirit. You email is - well, we know - so feel free to write and we shall share tea and old stories to our delight. Paisean do beath...

California Gay Marriage Ruling Sparks New Debate
A sprited debate about us. My partner and I don't belong to any GLB whatever. From what we see the Irish kind are a touched zany as yours. We have been together, herself to herself, for 20 some years since we tied our aprons together. We make no fuss but wait in our door for the day when we can be married. We each tried it with bad men and found love on the rebound, joining ourselves and our children in a glorious family. We are so proud. This bein Eire, we may not live to see the day when Chu...

California Gay Marriage Ruling Sparks New Debate
... Children are neither ligitimate or illigitimate, they simply are. The idea that a child is less worthy because of the marital state of the parents is an unenlightenedd superstition that arose when wives were the property of their husbands. The basic fact in any birth is that, without DNA testing, the only person who is 100 percent sure the child is theirs is the mother. Perhaps to ensure the sanctity of marriage, DNA tests should be run on all newborns and when the newborn DNA does not m...

California Gay Marriage Ruling Sparks New Debate
Thank you for your comments, adding to what has become an interesting discussion. You said several interesting things. Let me take them one at a time. What we call marriage is NOT as simple as the historical recognition of a basic human drive to unite with another human being. If that were the case, same sex marriage would have been legal throughout time in all countries. Based on that reasoning, we would not have democracy at all, including freedom of the press, assembly, and a number of other ...

California Gay Marriage Ruling Sparks New Debate
What we call marriage is NOT as simple as the historical recognition of a basic human drive to unite with another human being. If that were the case, same sex marriage would have been legal throughout time in all countries. The opposite is true. In reality the true meaning of marriage was for the legitimacy of children. It was not long ago when a woman that gave birth out of wedlock was scorned. In all countries throughout the world, marriage has been reserved for the union of a man and a woman ...

Historical Perspective: US State Leadership And Innovation
The US states have been essential to our democracy from the start. The creative variation they promote can be the best we have to offer (Wyoming and a woman's right to vote) and the worst (southern racial segregation). The sorting out of best from worst is an arduous process, but strengthens our nation without imposing solutions from the federal level which, if bad, can lock us into a destructive pattern. The proven best solutions open a door to universal progress. We at TS-Si believe that long...

Richard Smith, Editor-in-Chief, introduces Cases Journal. Dr. Smith urges all physicians to submit their case reports to the new open access Cases Journal, which publishes case reports from any area of healthcare.

Cases Journal will publish any case report that is understandable, ethical, authentic, and includes all essential information. A more selective companion, the Journal of Medical Case Reports, publishes original and interesting case reports that contribute significantly to medical knowledge. Article submissions are subject to potential publication by either journal. All reports will be entered in a common and open access database.
