The Metabolism Of Uric Acid In Transsexual Persons
TS-Si News Service
Monday, 09 June 2008
Malaga, Andalucia, Spain. There has been relatively little systematic study of the effects of long-term cross-sex hormone therapy in male-to-female (M2F) and female-to-male (F2M) transsexuals [cf. sidebar]. Now, this is beginning to change. A research team from Hospital Regional Universitario Carlos Haya [N1] studied changes in the serum uric acid (urate) levels. Uric acid, an organic compound, is produced in large quantities by the normal human metabolism.
Ordinarily, people can have elevated levels of uric acid for variety of hereditary or dietary reasons. Any changes in may be an independent mortality factor of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), cytokines, and various inflammatory markers. Cytokines are a general category of signalling proteins and glycoproteins, critical to the functioning of both innate and adaptive immune responses. Cellular communication depends on them , along with hormones and neurotransmitters.

Effect of Long-Term Administration of Cross-Sex Hormone Therapy on Serum and Urinary Uric Acid in Transsexual Persons. R. Yahyaoui, I. Esteva, J. J. Haro-Mora, M. C. Almaraz, S. Morcillo, G. Rojo-Martínez, J. Martínez, J. M. Gómez-Zumaquero, I. González, V. Hernando and F. Soriguer. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism 93(6) 2230-2233. doi: 10.1210 / jc.2007-2467.

The basis of this study, and a few others like it, is an analysis of the serum chemistry and possble health effects. Blood serum is derived from blood plasma [cf. sidebar] after the removal of blood cells, clotting factors, and other materials. The study of uric acid serum levels produced findings of general interest that were published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Potential Estrogen Substitute Found In Early Stage Bone Cells
Sharon Gaughan

New Haven, CT, USA. The naturally occurring female sex hormone estradiol plays an important role in maintaining skeletal health by balancing the ongoing processes of bone resorption and bone formation that normally occur throughout life.
Restoring estrogen levels after menopause helps to mitigate some of the more harmful side effects of hormone loss that generally occur during aging.
Researchers have now discovered that cells on their way to forming bone also produce an estrogen-like substance that mimics estradiol. Researchers hope such a molecule might provide some of the benefits but, hopefully, not the health risk of traditional hormonal therapies for menopause and bone loss.

A Common Herbicide Disrupts Human Hormonal Signaling

San Francisco, CA, USA. Atrazine, a common weedkiller in the U.S., already suspected of causing sexual abnormalities in frogs and fish, has now been found to alter hormonal signaling in human cells. The herbicide is the second most widely used weedkiller in the U.S., applied to corn and sorghum fields throughout the Midwest and also spread on suburban lawns and gardens. It was banned in Europe after studies linked the chemical to endocrine disruptions in fish and amphibians.
The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) study is the first to identify the full effect of atrazine on human cells. In studies with human placental cells in culture, the UCSF scientists found that atrazine increased the activity of a gene associated with abnormal human birth weight when over-expressed in the placenta. It also targeted a second gene that has been found to be amplified in the uterus of women with unexplained infertility. The findings were published in the journal PLoS One.

Clinical Practice Guidelines Issued For Hirutism Treatment
TS-Si News Service
Friday, 25 April 2008
Chevy Chase, MD, USA. Women born with Harry Benjamin Syndrome (HBS) have not been menopausal. Medical practitioners typically provide treatments founded on research into post-menopausal symptoms. New research on pre-menopausal women has a more nearly direct, if inexact, analogue. The subject is hirsutism, the occurrence of increased and excessive hair growth in females at locations where it is normally minimal or absent. The growth patterns are usually those associated with males.
New clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of hirsutism in premenopausal women have been released The Endocrine Society. They have been published in the Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), its flagship publication.

Finding Our Way

Richard Smith, Editor-in-Chief, introduces Cases Journal. Dr. Smith urges all physicians to submit their case reports to the new open access Cases Journal, which publishes case reports from any area of healthcare.

Cases Journal will publish any case report that is understandable, ethical, authentic, and includes all essential information. A more selective companion, the Journal of Medical Case Reports, publishes original and interesting case reports that contribute significantly to medical knowledge. Article submissions are subject to potential publication by either journal. All reports will be entered in a common and open access database.
