There are any number of baseline studies that seem to confirm conventional wisdom. Even so, they are an important part of science and medicine since they provide a consistent bank of data. That in turn can be used to conduct further research.

Sometimes, there are useful surprises when conventional wisdom can not be confirmed. For an example of this, see today's article entitled &lt;i&gt;Does Biology Influence Political Activities And Electoral Participation?&lt;/i&gt; - 6 July 2008. The results reported there run &quot;... counter to decades of conventional wisdom that family upbringing is a primary indicator of ..&quot; &lt;i&gt;political&lt;/i&gt; behavior.
