Bernadette's Story

is a remarkable journey. The best part is that much more remains to be told. The sixth and final part of our series will arrive next week. But that is not the end. I am sure we will hear more from her UK enclave in the years to come.

The recent inappropriate comment highlights an important point about all of us born HBS. Our profile is quite different than the press reports and blog exchanges might lead one to assume.

Here at TS-Si, we receive reports from all around the world from people in all stations of life. There are rich, poor, high, low, and every shade between. We seem to occur at random, without regard to social theory, presumptions about gender, or currently fashionable intrusions from those who see all human acts as political, especially ours.

Worse, we violate the expectations some have for an acceptable outcome to our transition(s). This means that all kinds of people transition and all kinds of people succeed: high and low and in-between. We hear from folks on the Left, Right, and in-between - rich, poor, and so on.

And that is the point of transition: emerge as ourselves, whatever that may be, but always with our innate biological wiring and anatomical sex in alignment.

Limiting authenticity to one slice of humanity on sociopolitical grounds, dismissing all else, is to impoverish us all, denying us the benefit of the vast human potential unlocked by a successful transition.

Peace,
Sharon - Sharon S. Gaughan

I can only assume that by middle-class snob Marge means ....

I can only assume that by middle-class snob Marge means that Bernadette used the gifts she was born with and made the system work for her. For in reality, in England, you are not really middle class until you are the fifth generation or so born into it.

John Lennon was never middle class, no matter how much money he made or how many Orders he may have received. To the upper class, the old money middle class (if there is such a term), he was always and always would be that scruffy working class guy from Liverpool.

All men are created with the equal opportunity to succeed, to overcome their the handicaps of their birth and family, to use their inborn talents and determination to become whomever they wish to be. Unfortunately, the distribution of inborn talents and skills is not democractic, neither is determination -- but there is little that can be done to make us all equal to Thomas Jefferson or Stephen Hawking. No legislation, no social change, no educational opportunities will transform everyone into an Einstein or a Leonardo.

As Jesus said (or his biographical revisionist), the poor -- of spirit, of money, of inborn talent and skills -- will always be with us. The best we can do is to make the life of this world more gentle, but in doing so, we need not hoard our talent and let life slip by us in our despair. - Lisa Thompson
