Well said Pamela. I have a friend in Canada who constantly rails against their system. They pay extrememly high taxes to support a system that often doens't provide her needs within the time frame needed to attend to her health issues. So she has to pay out-of-pocket to go see her physician out-of-system. She had to have knee surgery last year but there is a two-year wait to see a diagnostic physician, then more waiting for the scheduling of the actual procedure. There are substantial disadvantages to the national health care system in Canada, the only foreign health care system of which I have any personal knowledge. Understandably I would not endorse a candidate whose health care reform agenda would emulate Canada's.

While we do have technological and skill advantages over some countries, the cost of maintaining that edge makes it unavailable to a large segment of our society. Therein lies the weakness where focus needs to be directed: cost. If costs were contained to within a range of affordability, and if the United States' collective mindset could be weaned away from the greed mentality (both huge 'ifs') perhaps we would see health care return to its intended function of caring for the health of all Americans rather than caring for the wealth of the health care system in all its many layers and disguises. - Kelly

Part of the reason people in this country fail to see that it's one of the better health care services in the world in terms of speed and quality is all the negative information published by a biased news media and a lack of any real knowledge about the failures of the socialistic national health services in other countries such as Canada, Great Britain, France and Sweden. They don't hear about Oby clinics turning away clients for a lack of space ( Great Britain), Older people waiting 2 or more years in pain for things like knee and hip replacements (Sweden) and long waits for basic diagnostic services such as CT and MRI Scans (Canada) nor do they realise that often you have NO choice in Hospitals, surgeons and GP's and that Simon prescription drugs aren't available due to the cost and other factors. All they hear is "FREE" for everybody without seeing the total cost and necessary increase in taxes. They also don't hear about how on the NHS in Great Britain it is nearly impossible to find a dentist.

Also consider that a national health service would be run by the same people that brought you social security, welfare, the Veterans Administration Health care/hospitals and your local drivers license bureau.
