Fairfax, VA, USA. Elsewhere on the internet, in the web blogs and their knee jerk ranting comments, the world wide transgender range wars rage on. The proponents see themselves as white hats and the targets of their philippic harangues as unscrupulous villains dressed in black from head and toe. I read very few of these blogs, other than those pointed out to us here at TS-Si as possibly being of interest to us on these pages. [N1] But that doesn’t mean I am ignorant of the essence of what is going down out there, or that I will not write about the bluster and the clamor. If the web arguments were conducted person to person in 3-D, blood would be shed instead of logic and decorum. Distance has its virtues.

There ...But just as in the real American West of history, when high noon arrives, there is often no clear line of demarcation between good and evil. Frequently the emotionally violent arguments focus on who might be the whitest shade of gray. In many ways, the blogs are junior high school, with the self-select few attempting to impose their will in the hallways.
The most vocal bloggers and their fawning sycophants attack in packs, descending upon their chosen victims, forming unschooled bands of brothers intent on silencing their selected target. They are the engineer, the conductor, and the passengers on a train of their own making. If their target doesn’t follow the rigid tracks laid down by the blogger, declaration of war soon follows.
They are never responsible for what happens, of course, but that doesn’t stop them from trying to earn a rep and be will known. Achieving Five minutes of fame has become a goal in itself. Fifteen minutes is a lifetime on the internet blogs. Like a five year old child, the attack bloggers demand their attention. They would have us take seriously their incoherent assaults on each other. Ignoring them is often the best medicine and most prudent choice. You cannot ignore a child but you need not read the anti-intellectual collective the world of gender blogs has become. There’s no point. In a world of science and logic, the gender blogs cloister themselves in angry invective and self-righteousness.
The gender bloggers belief that they are changing the world has little to do with their actual influence. Most gender blogs are frequented by the already converted. The ongoing conversation is inbred and most resembles a losing football team attempting to rally itself in a halftime locker room. Once out in the bright lights of the public field, however, their voices are lost in the great swell of the crowd. The blogs are just that, blogs, and significantly cheaper than a weekly hour with your therapists. They are so misinformed that the gender bloggers often refer to TS-Si as a blog. Somehow they avoid the thousands of science articles and see only what they want to see. It must be nice to avoid science that might provide true argument against questionable philosophical stances. The truth will set you free but it might also prove you wrong.
Although silence may be a source of great strength, [N6] silence is easy to read as consent to the noisy demands of the mob. Alternately, those who oppose you may interpret silence as having achieved their goals of successful intimidation. There are moments when silence will not serve, moments when someone must point out that the attack bloggers have no clothes. The battle still rages, the shouting grows ever louder, but perhaps this is the moment to raise the flag above Iwo Jima and declare the blog wars over. But I doubt that will happen. The clueless will always be with us. Notes[N1] The word “Pages” is obviously the wrong noun for electronic media but a better one that is as simple and graceful does not spring easily to mind. In this instance, the authorial choice of “pages” should be considered metaphorical.
